Hello everyone. Kate here with you today with a spring release featuring some more of my quirky creatures perfect for cards, tags, art journaling and anything else! But this time I wanted to create some larger stamps and take a step away from my usuall small elements. I'm loving going large! So much freedom and possibility here. You a use the whole image, you can cut them down, you can even mix and match to create new quirky creatures. And to add to the creativity there are three new stencils - a powerful energetic circle shape (because we all love a circle), as well as a leaf shape presented in neat lines, and in contrast a floating feather shape with a dynamic loose all over design. Let's have a closer look.

Red Rubber Stamps (A5 set)

Lookout birdy!
- Journal page on leafy background

And for starters, here's an art journal page with a bird on the lookout. In fact it's a bird with a bird, both on the lookout! (The little robin to the right is from set KC019 but more on that later). I wanted to create a bird with extended long arms and long legs, without wings (but you could add them of course) to give it something of a whimsical human quality.

First of all I created some backgrounds using alcohol inks and the new stencils, layered them up, and then cut a large circle to create a spotlight effect. This is on a large page in my square kraft journal and the bird is such a good size to go on a larger page.

And here's a closer look at the slightly grumpy face! Or maybe it's just super-focused on something invisible in the distance.

Sharing the Love
- Greetings Card

So here's the second bird, this time coloured by paper piecing using a gel print. The hand held sign is a great addition to convey a message. The set comes with 'stop' and 'go' words which fit neatly inside but you can of course add the heart image from the set, or in fact any image or any message. Spot the feathers in the background print too.

This appears on the front of a greetings card, and I used the KISS KISS from set KC020. Ooh, and look! There's that little robin again!

Cropped Birdy - Art Tag

Here's an example of a cut down image; a bird cut down to head and shoulders size to fit on a smaller tag.

Of course he's got his trusty little side-kick perched on top of his head still.

And you may also notice a leafy print in the background.

Slow and Steady
- Art Journal Page over a Multi Layered Mixed Media Background

I do love a messy, scribbly, multi layered art journal background. So much fun to create! And of course this time the feature image is a hare. In a jumper and with butterfly wings, because why not?

This is another example of cutting down an image to suit. This one chops off perfectly at the lower edge of the jumper. I placed him over a little strip, to ground him a little bit, and left his lovely long arms dangling.

This set includes a little spiral swirl too, so useful for adding a bit of extra detail to your backgrounds.

And you will probably notice that cheeky little robin in the corner again. The robin is a part of this set and works perfectly alongside the hares, but actually the robin just seems to work on anything and everything.

Hare we go!
- Art Tag

A hare with wings, and now an added crown too! I added a tall slim crown to this set. I think it makes the hare look very regal, and just adds to the fun and whimsy of the image.

And a little close-up look at the wings. You can see here I double stamped these to allow me to lift the top layer and add a bit of dimension.

And here's a close-up of the cheeky little face. I used quite a bit of glitter, and also something clear and dimensional on the nose works really well too.

Butterfly Hare
- Art Tag

These hares work really well coloured in a neutral grey, but here I think a lovely mid brown works really well too. But I do think the whimsical nature of the images leads itself to any colour actually!

I used a bit of an old pick up print for the background here, but you can see I added quite a bit of texture stamping, some from older mini stamps, but also the lovely spiral from this very set. Notice too how I let the crown just hover here.

Is it a Bird ....???
- Mixed up Stamps Art Tag

Is it a bird? Is it a hare? What exactly is it? Actually it's both!

Mixing and matching stamps is so much fun and allows you to get really quite creative. I used the bird body, holding the sign, and added the head of a hare. It's a perfect fit. Oh, and there's that little robin again, perching on the sign this time. It's a bit cheeky and seems to get everywhere!

Adding the hare to the bird body adds quite a lot of character, and gives a whole new different life to the hare. Here's he's holding a sign, and you can totally add your own message here.

You might notice that the background is a print using the new feather stencil (more on that in a moment) and also lots of spiral stamping. I think the spiral is going to be one of my go-to stamps for adding to backgrounds.

A bird for any and every occasion

Oh the robin! I initially added him as a tiny little extra to go with the hares, but he just won't be left in the background, he wants to feature! Of course repetition is a great way to use a small image to create something bigger. I added a little nursery rhyme quote that I found in a vintage book.

But here on this chipboard page he seems quite happy to fly solo! Such a useful little creature.

Swim against the Current
- Art Journal page

Fish always seem popular, and I think really do think there is a fish for every occasion. This set features a much larger fish, as well as several smaller ones, and also fish swimming in different directions. You might notice they all have a beautiful large kissy pout, so I added a large KISS KISS to make the most of this.

Again I started in my large Kraft journal and created another messy painterly scribbly background (Did you spot the new circle stencil?!) The small fish on the left is actually dangling using an acetate strip, leaving him free to 'swim against the current'. I love this quote. It's a reminder to us all that it is actually OK to do your own thing.

The large fish makes a super nice central focal image, and also sits very nicely in the centre of the circle stencil. Lots of glitter, and some glossy dimensional accent on the lips makes for a super nice pout.

Kissy Kissy Fishy
- Greetings Card

The set features two (almost) identical fish facing in opposite directions which is actually really useful. Once they are facing each other it opens up options, in this case a quick kiss kiss!

To complete the card I added a heart, which actually comes from KC018.

I kept the background mostly quite plain, but I mounted it over a colourful feathery gel plate print.

Energetic gel plate prints

Circles are always a popular and very useful shape to work with. There is so much energy emanating from the centre of a circular print. I always hand draw my stencils as I want to retain the hand-made look, so if you look closely you will see little quirks. It would of course be relatively simple to clean it all up digitally but I choose not to, and that way every shape drawn in this circular shape is a little different.

These are prints made using alcohol inks on the gel plate, a different result every time.

Painterly stencil background
- Art Journal Page

Of course there are so many ways to use a stencil. I often use them for printing, but sometimes just sponging paint through on a painterly background adds great pattern and dimension too.

You can see my sponged pattern peeking through behind the fish here.

And of course the centre of a circle shape is a great place for your main focal image too!

Leaves in a Row
- Gel Plate Prints

I do love a leaf shape. They can represent spring, they can represent autumn, or they can just make a great shape to use in your backgrounds. I chose to repeat my leaf design in a regular ordered way, in contrast to the feather stencil (coming up next!) I like to make sure there are options. Sometimes you want a more rigid pattern and sometimes you don't!

I usually start by making a few prints on the gel plate, so that I have plenty of ready made backgrounds.

But that way you get a lot of pick-up prints to do, and they all come out differently.

Leafy backgrounds
- Art Journal page

Layering prints is one of my favourite things to do, and can create fun and colourful backgrounds. I layered a couple of leafy prints up here in my art journal, and then added the third as a circle to create a spotlight effect. A perfect place for the main focal image. And look how nicely two different leaf prints sit next to each other!

Floating Feathers
- Gel Plate Prints

And in complete contrast to the neat and structured rows of leaves, we have floating feathers creating a sense of movement.

Here you can see a gel plate print using alcohol inks but I then added some detail with a white pen. Of course you don't have to be neat and accurate about this, in fact it's probably better if you're not!

And some more prints ...

... and pick up prints.

I designed the feather with quite a fine central line which does create a nice delicate feather shape.

Feathery print
- Greetings Card

Of course a print using feathers makes a perfect companion for a bird image.

 Sponged Stencil Image
- Journal Page

Stencils don't always have to be used to create an all-over background though. If you closely at my journal page you will see that I have stencilled through the feather with white paint just to build up a little pattern here and there.

I do love a stencil, they really do help to boost your creativity and they can be used in so many different ways, allowing you to build backgrounds and play with multiple layers. And printing too of course.

Well, I hope you have enjoyed meeting my latest collection for Paper Artsy, and I also hope you enjoyed too this little glimpse into my thought process and design decisions. Creating with slightly larger images opens up new possibilities and I'm so looking forward to seeing what you create.

Of course A HUGE thank you to the PaperArtsy crew for making these stamps and making all this creativity possible!
