NEW PaperArtsy Products: Lynne Perrella {Jan 2026}

A note from Leandra

We have 3 new stamps and 3 new stencils coming your way from Lynne, with a touch of inspiration from Charles Rennie Mackintosh, I'm sure you'll recognise a distinctive Rennie-inspired rose popping up across these designs with regularity.

I also leaned into a Rennie-inspired colour palette of purples, bright blues and red-pinks even a smidge of apricot. Not colours I might automatically go to, but it's good to step out of your comfort zone to explore striking combinations, and when I see them together they certainly amp up the intensity and impact of these beautiful stamp designs by Lynne.

Lynne has put together an interesting commentary for you below, so take your time, it really is a pleasure to read her thoughts and what makes her tick creatively!

I will be along to share with you LIVE these new products and ideas over in our Facebook Group, 'PaperArtsy People' shortly after this post publishes, with any luck, if i conquer the tech challenge, i will be live on the PaperArtsy YouTube as well!

These stamps are available now EXCLUSIVELY from our approved stockists. Please check the list at the foot of this post to find a retailer online or geographically near you. Our retailers endeavour to join the designer's live to share their direct shopping links - this makes it super easy for you to find a store with product in stock immediately.

Design Notes – Winter Rose Stamps and Stencils
by Lynne Perrella

Art Friends,

My longtime fascinations always end up in my designs for PaperArtsy, and this latest collection (titled “Winter Rose”) is no exception.
Inspired by Scottish artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868 – 1928) these drawings illuminate many of the creative cross-currents of his work.  Structure and romance.  Simplicity and intricacy.  Softness and serenity.  After the encompassing undulating vines of the Art Nouveau era, Mackintosh innovated with designs that were stylized, lyrical, and romantic…..often inspired by floral motifs, grid patterns, and luscious colors.

I’ve been exploring Mackintosh for years, starting with a series of mixed-media collages, see the blue portrait, below. Following my research, I set aside my files and created a series of work prompted-but-not-limited to the well-established grace notes of this respected artist.

Several motifs carried through this series – grids and lattices, as well as his punctuating “squares”, and floral elements.  A part of almost every Mackintosh design:  a signature, stylized ROSE.  He included it in his textiles, furnishings, stained glass windows, woodwork, and more.

Another of my Mackintosh-inspired collages (red grouping, image top of this section) shows a dramatic row of female characters in a procession or tableau.  The costume details are intricate-yet-poster-like, and I knew that a series of stamps based on this collage would give the user endless opportunities to either combine the figures, or use singly.

When I complete the artwork for my designs, I often make table top tableaus of the images; using whatever is in the studio.  In this case, it was fun to hand-color the details of the gowns, using markers and gel pens.  It would be fun to cover a journal page with row-upon-row of a sisterhood of the figures, stamped in different colors, juxtapositions, etc.  Or use just one of the ladies on a beautiful tag, tied with frothy tulle.

The lettering and typography of that era influenced me to design a “message” stamp.  Borrowing from a well-known quote, “a rose is a rose is a rose is a rose”, I hand-drew the letters, for a softer look, and married the message with an image that reflected the feminine vibe of the words.  A handful of tags became a cascading necklace….a wearable poem.

Mackintosh became known for the elegant Willow Tea Rooms he created, and each environment included his designs for stained glass windows, furniture, dinnerware, silverware, dividers, paneled doors, and carpeting.
Imagining the ladies who might scurry into such a place to find refuge on a cold windy day, I designed a stamp showing a serene beauty wearing a hat with Mackintosh roses, and a soft scarf.   I hand-colored the image and realized how the colors matched a floral painting on the cover of one of my Mackintosh reference books.  Voila!

Stylized roses plus a classic portrait/face – simply perfect.  I can imagine this stamp used in endless ways.  As a decorative embellishment on the front of a journal, stamped on fabric, the centerpiece for a journal page combined with a favorite quote, and more.

I couldn’t imagine a stamp collection inspired by Mackintosh without including a rose stencil.  The tight swirls of the rose petals are somewhat abstract, and two sizes are included for layering.

When I stencil, I use acrylic paints and a make-up sponge (wedge) and work extremely dry.  This creates a crisp, well-defined image without any blobbing or distortion.  And I’ve also included the customary small squares that appeared in Mackintosh’s work.

My tip:  if you think you are finished with a page, add more!  For instance, a series of these small squares placed throughout your artwork would be a great way to keep going, adding finishing touches.  Notice how the squares add something “extra” to the blue collage at the top.  They add detail to the grid border, and are a great counterpoint to the softness of the rose motif.

This was a welcome opportunity to immerse myself in an artistic era that continues to inspire and inform the design world.   The many flashpoints I observed by studying Mackintosh fueled my own original illustrations for this collection.  As always, I love the challenge of designing stamps that are elegant, intricate, inspirational and graphic.  And the best part of designing stamps is seeing what the artists DO with them!

HEARTY ROSES

This could be a bookmark as it is the perfect proportion, possibly a little bulky with the fibres. Look closely and you will see this stamp is in 3 parts, so you can ink up all or part.

It all started with a brayered underlayer. The image was stamped onto a painted background, then embossed with clear powder- I just find that makes it easier to add more paint in the non-embossed areas.

I used the bottom of the stamp to make a blue-inked border, and added watery paint to make the edge boxes darker, it feels like a more solid frame now.

 MACKINTOSH FRAMED

Later in the week, Tracy Scott also has a release, and this stencil used in the background is one of her new products. To me it screamed Rennie Mackintosh, so it was layered with infusion powders, spritzed with water liberally, and then prints taken.

I adore this face with her rose halo. She was given a new vintage dress 'Taille Unique' serendipitously reflects the bespoke fitting she was given allowing the shoulder area to melt into the new dress, which is actually a vintage receipt from a French tailor! Oh la la!

NINE UP

This was fun. Boxes were roughly sketched onto a blank piece of card with a pigment pen, and as luck would have it, across the 3 stamp plates there are nine faces! You can see where this is heading!

Before I stamped the images, each box was very lightly sprinkled with Infusions which were activated with a liberal amount of water. (In The Navy, Sleight Blue, Frankly Scarlet and Raspberry). In hindsight, I should have not put the infusions in the centre of each square but to the edges, because a dark blue face is not always what you want to see!

Touches of painted colour was added to each of the ladies, sticking to the pre-selected colour palette (Southern Skies, Purple Majesty, Peachy Keen, Flamingo, Cerise and Cherry Red). Sometimes the face was 'made up' other times the emphasis was on the roses or the clothing.

I like how the white space works on this sheet, allowing each focal element to stand out. The 3 girls from LPC80 are all a bit Japanese in their style, they make a great trio. I'm sure they must be the best of friends!

THE REGAL ONE

With her Mackintosh 'Halo' from the centre of Tracy's stencil mentioned previously, she crtainly looks regal with her ivy-dripping headdress. Again this stamp can be used in whole or part, the lower section offers a more abstract, postal layer, and the bold patterns are a nice 'ground' for this composition.

You can see popping through from the lower layer,  I selectively inked up the words 'A rose is a rose' which Lynne beautifully reflects a Mackintosh style font in her own hand script.

PURPLE RAIN

I'm sure this beauty would rather it did not rain, her silk roses on her hat would surely not like that! The base layer of the card is done in three parts; paint in Southern Skies and Purple Majesty, that is over stamped with the rose-halo from the stamp LPC079, in Chantilly Fresco Paint, and finally, the texture from the lower part of the stamp used in the sample above is randomly applied to the card to bring in a bit of structure to lay the focal image on top.

I did intent to dress her up too by cutting away the frame and adding some clothes, but in the end, this is as far as I got because I quite liked the white panel too much to cut away the abstract sections.  I love how the soft brayered colour automatically brightens her face in an abstract way. A little blush reflects the colour of her scarf, which was chosen because of the roses, of course!

MORE NINE UP FACES

A few close ups from the nine-up panel. If I had embossed the black design, then the images would pop, but having missed that boat, i should just need to go over the facial lines with a black pigment pen to bring back a bit more consistency.

Again, just the top half of the Regal One here, she too could have a new hybrid dress should she choose!

One of my favourites, the image is piercing, maybe the blue eyeshadow highlights that expression, but I love the font. Actually, the stamp has a rectangular frame, I inked it up, but wiped the ink away from the frame because the stamp fitted so perfectly in this hand-drawn frame.

LAYERED ROSE

As you can see from the sample, the rose can be layered onto a solid round-ish shape background, allowing it to pop off the underlayers.

I tested out a bit of overlapping, and tried to build depth with an ombre effect. If you wanted to be more specific about petal colouring, you can use markers, pencils etc to be more accurate. I added detail by tracing the design a little off perfect to get that white highlight showing, adding more interest. Look closely, and you will see I also embossed a few of the roses, which adds a lot more depth of colour.

With the art added on top of the background (stamp from LPC081), it all chimes together with some vivid colour pops around the sample. The title comes from PS495, below.

A ROSE IS A ROSE

Paint was applied through the stencil, first in a mix of Purple Majesty and Lipstick Red, to produce a deep plum. To make that pop more I gently put some black paint over the top, but not too heavily. Once embossed, the end impact was perfect. I've been using a chunky crystal clear EP, so that is why there is quite a lot of texture from the embossing.

ALL THAT GLITTERS

Paint was applied in pinks and oranges, dried, then Versamark embossing ink was applied through the stencil. Onto that I applied the chunky clear EP first in random places, then small glittery pinches in bright pink and yellow-gold for some nice pazazz!

Next the stamped images, also clear embossed, laid on top with the colours working well with the underlayers. I could add more colour to this stamp, but as there was already some nice pops on the card, i just left her as she was once stamped.

Yes, she's got sass, and a bit of that is what we all need now and then!

PART TWO

There are 2 parts to this stencil design, and you can see the small 'rose window', among the 'rose is a rose' phrase (from stamp set LPC081), has been enlarged. This is a fabulous size to start applying paint in a more targeted manner to get some colour blends and depth going on within the pattern. Building colours makes a stencil far less flat looking, and our reds and oranges are translucent, so they do like to be applied in multiple layers, but i do love how that swoosh of Bermuda blue still can be seen.

One of the 3 girls from LPC080 is used here, with the roses at the shoulders and hem of her dress coloured to mimic the underlayers. Again everything is embossed in clear to give some gloss and subtle elegance.

That brings us to the close of what is quite a substantial release, lots to get your teeth into!

I love how the elements all works beautifully together, both across the stamp sets, but also those stencils make layering easy, just choose your colours, and off you go into a Mackintosh inspired world of Lynne Perrella!
