Hi everyone. Kate here with my latest release for Paper Artsy, and a magical and mystical one it is!  I think we all need a little magic in our lives, something to lift our spirits in tumultuous times. Something real or imaginary (who knows?) to believe in. A multitude of quirky toadstools, lots of fluttery things, mystical girls, alongside stencils that offer a whole host of additions to your page as well as designs that are just bursting out from the centre. I hope you enjoy creating with these as much as I do!

Kate Crane - A5 Stamp Set 012 {KC012}

There is absolutely nothing not to like about a good old toadstool, and absolutely everything to love about the possibilities they offer when creating. A whole host of different sizes and quirky designs which work well as a single  focal element or equally well when grouped together. They also work and coordinate brilliantly alongside the other stamp sets (more about that later!)

All good things are wild and free

Here we have single toadstool as a central focal element. This fun, quirky design is filled with a bubble pattern which has been multicoloured to give it an almost 'sweet shop' feeling. I think you can colour this design in two ways - it works well if you colour the 'bubbles' but it works equally well if you colour the negative space.

A single toadstool works so well when you place it in the middle of a circular design (we all love circles!) and here I used stencil PS467 which bursts out from the centre and draws the eye in. I stamped the quotes 'all good things are wild and free' onto vintage paper and added it twice along the lines of the stencil, alongside 'don't trip over the small stuff'. I think this would lend itself to a multitude of projects, art journal, tags ... but here I added it to the front of a greetings card.

If you look very closely you will notice that a cheeky little flutterby landed on my toadstool!

FUNgi

Well, here we have the same toadstool but this time I coloured the negative space in a nice bold red leaving the bubbles or spots white, a  traditional toadstool colour scheme! Same toadstool over the same stencil background as above but a very different look.

I added this FUNgi to a journal page and you can see here where I added the journaling. The quote was stamped into DuraLar, or you could use something like Yupo, which is a very easy way to add a quote to a project. Also, I hope you like my very punny quote!

I felt that my toadstool needed something to stand on so I used a couple of orange scraps and then stencil P465 (my new go-to essential stencil!) to add the lines and triangles which helps to balance the whole page.

Don't trip over the small stuff

Well, I do love a tag! And here is another example of a single focal element, this time stamped on DuraLar (or Yupo) which gives a translucent slightly magical quality. Also placed over a background using stencil PS467 because the centre of the stencil design is just asking for something in the middle.

So far, I have shown you how I like to use a single toadstool as a striking focal element, but when you place them together in groups, layering them up, adding dimension, then something really magical happens as you will see! Read on!

Kate Crane - A5 stamp set 013 {KC013}

This is where the magic happens. Some serene and peaceful mystical girls, stars and moons for a little lunar magic, and a bottles for special potions, along with a few quotes oozing positivity,  suitable for journal pages, tags and cards.

Believe in yourself

I loved creating this journal page! It's got a bit of everything - stencil PS465 for a background which features the powerful circle shape combined with lunar elements, and  a little gang of toadstools surrounding the tall and serene mystical girl. She is a little taller than most of my character stamps so she work well in a larger journal page. Of course if you want her a bit smaller you can always cut her in half! (EEK! Don't tell her I said that!)

I layered the toadstools under and over the image to truly bed her into the page. I glued some of them flat to the page but also used 3-D foam to lift some a little higher adding to the dimensional group feel. And you might just notice I added a little texture stamping to her body using a previously released mini stamp. Notice how I didn't place her in the centre this time though, but more to one side. I think it still works.

I added a few bottles of magic love potions along with a positive and encouraging quote to 'believe in yourself'. The little tag can be added to any of the bottles and there is even space for you to add a word describing the contents.

Of course the bottles needed a shelf to stand on which is where stencil PS465 came to the rescue again!

Enjoy every moment

Another journal page, another serene and peaceful mystical girl. I used a gel print using stencil PS467 to add another powerful circle shape just bursting out from the centre. My journal has Kraft pages so I trimmed the print down and only part covered the page which allowed the girl to really feature as the main focal point.

You might be able to see I used quite a bit of the beautiful Gold Fresco paint to add to the background, printing from the centre out with an old card, to add to the powerful and mystical feel around the main image.

Those marks surround the girl and seem to surround her with an ethereal glow.

I used the moon and star stamp to create a hanging feature in the top corner, using a strip of acetate to let it hang free.

Believe in Magic

Another mystical girl but more of a head and shoulders image. Smaller, yet she still packs a punch especially when you place her right bang in the middle again!

I used a lot of Gold Fresco paint again, and also placed the quote out from the centre to help build power inside the circle.

Images using the ever useful Stencil PS465 allowed me to add a very fitting  moon and a star, and also a little stripe to ground the image.

Kate Crane - A5 stamp set 014 {KC014}

Oh flutterby butterfly! I truly believe there is never ever a time when adding something fluttery to a page doesn't work. Here I created an eclectic selection of quirky things with wings, with a variety of different patterns for you to colour. They can be a main focal point, grouped together, or added to a different image as an extra (like the tag at the top of this post).

Flutterby Butterfly

A circular mandala shape is a great way to  place and use your stamps. Many many stamps will work when used like this, but the nice thing here is that when I placed the fluttery creatures in a circle their antennae met to create a shape in the centre, which lined up with the centre created by the stencil and that made me go 'Ahhhh' !

I kept my colouring very loose, building up pools of colour allowing some white space to remain.

And some added shading and a few scribbles with a white pen of course.

If you look closely at the corners of my page you will notice the small floral stamp from the set. This is a fabulous little stamp for building up texture and colours on your backgrounds.

Just wing it

Just a quick and simple card, because not everything has to be complicated. I used a couple of gel prints and layered them allowing the central circle from either of the circle stencils to sit right in the middle. I stamped the moth and coloured him rainbow style and then stamped again into DuraLar (or Yupo) which I folded and creased and stuck to the centre giving it lovely dimension.

Just some glitter and a bit of white scribbling to finish it off.

PaperArtsy Stencil by Kate Crane 465 {PS465}

An always useful stencil of marks and images that can add so much to your projects. It's different to my previous marks stencil as that was purely marks, but this has a whole host of little images too. I wanted a stencil with many images so that I (and you) can create whole pages in one go to cut out add. So useful!

Creating a transparency

One of the things I like to do with a stencil like this is create a transparency by drawing through the stencil with a permanent marker pen, onto something transparent. This means you can add bold marks to your almost finished page without the fear of ruining it by stamping it incorrectly (we've all done it!)

I created this really small page in a mini journal, I think you will recognise the toadstool here. I added some crosses but then doodled over them with a white pen.

Notice how they become almost floral when you do that.

And you've already seen these above, but a super easy way to add bold black images on your page is to cut them out of the transparency and add them as a top layer. It's a foolproof and easy way to do this.

Lunar Power

Well you probably already know this by now but I do love the moon, it is such a very powerful image, but I also love circles too, another very powerful tool in the art box! But put them together and they can really pack a punch.

Throughout this post I have talked about the power of the central circle created by this stencil and I have really enjoyed playing about with this.

Here is a background I created with watery Infusions. You can not completely control the outcome with this technique and here I think it looks quite watery and a little bit ethereal.

And here is something a little bolder, using alcohol inks on the gel plate. However, you can't really control this outcome either!

As you've already seen above, adding Gold Fresco paint by printing with an old card following the lines out from the centre really makes the circle shape pop, and printing with old bottle lids on the full moons helps too.

Circle Burst

Even though this is stencil PS467, in my head I call it Circle Burst because that is exactly what it is! A circle which absolutely busts out from the centre. As soon as you print something like this you can almost feel the energy bursting out from the centre. When this stencil arrived and I got to use it for the first time I was really delighted with it. It burst out from the centre even more than I imagined and it creates an amazing central circle for you to place an image.

Here I used alcohol inks on the gel plate.

And then I added a lot of printing with Gold Fresco paint bringing those lines out from the centre too, and adding those extra lines really adds such a lot and enhances the power of the circle.

The lines leading out from the centre also make a great and slightly unusual place to add a quote.

And as you already saw earlier, a very handy set of lines to add some journaling.

Well I do hope you have enjoyed meeting my new stamps and stencils and have seen some of the ways you can use them. They work as stand alone images, also work great placed in groups, and best of all work brilliantly together across the stamps sets. I think I've probably talked enough about the power of a circle, but it really is true! And finally the stencil of ever useful images is going to be a 'go-to' for sure. Thanks so much for joining me here, and I look forward to seeing your creations :-)
