A note from Leandra ...
It's another super quirky release from Kate: Quirky Birds, Quirky Fish and Quirky Flowers! All adorable and extremely endearing!
If you have been following us on Facebook over the past couple of weeks, you may well have seen some sneaky peeks of these designs while we were at a recent tradeshow in Frankfurt, meeting with the retailers we supply in Europe and beyond.
Six of our designers were with us to share their latest designs, and Kate was one of the crew, her first time hanging out with her new teamies since joining PaperArtsy as a designer. We had a fabulous time with each other at the show, and many stores certainly enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with each designer, understanding their preferred techniques, some of which I am sure Kate will be sharing with you today!
Kate will be LIVE over in our Facebook Group, 'PaperArtsy People' shortly after this post publishes, and ... don't forget
These stamps are ONLY available EXCLUSIVELY from our approved stockists. Please check the list at the foot of this post to find a retailer online or geographically near you, it makes sense to order within your country where possible.
Our retailers also endeavour to join the designer's live to share their direct shopping links - this makes it super easy for you to find a store with product in stock immediately.
Hi everyone, Kate here from the Kathryn Wheel and I'm very happy to be sharing my latest spring designs with you all.
Let me introduce you to my latest collection which is full of quirky birds, funky animals, and fabulous florals. After a long cold dreary winter (in my part of the world anyway!) we are just starting to feel the beginnings of spring. It's getting a little brighter by day, a little warmer, and the birds and animals are beginning to stir. It feels so optimistic. And so I am very happy to introduce you to my quirky birds, funky animals, and fabulous florals, just in time for spring.
Red Rubber Stamps (A5 set)

If the Crown fits wear it
I always love a bird, it just fits any occasion. I have added dots and stripes to the image, slightly OTT feathers, overgrown feet, as well as an optional crown. Because if the crown fits you should definitely wear it!
Here I added a crown and placed my bird in the centre of stencil PS454 because the circle makes a great frame for an image. (More on that later).
The background was made with very watery Infusions as well as a few added splats and doodles of course. And if you look closely you will see a little vine in the corner from stencil PS453. That touch of black just balances everything. I also added a little extra framing by adding wonky stitching around the edges. It can be quite tricky to sew in a straight line on paper so I prefer to exaggerate the wonkiness.
Here you can see some of my background doodles, and then of course a crown. Because why not? Every bird deserves a crown.
Own that crown
This bird means business. She is not one to mess with. The eyes are half closed giving her a fairly serious expression. She also has some lovely fluffy tail feathers and some oversized boots. Because she is very on trend!
Again I placed the image in the centre of stencil PS454 because it really is such a useful frame. And of course a crown because Queeeeeeeen.
Kate Crane Stamp Set 010 (KC010)
Have a close look at this stamp set and you might just notice that it has a floral theme. Every image has a floral headdress, or tail, or fin. This paves the way for some fancy colours and colouring I think. Maybe a rainbow coloured tail or headdress.
Funky Chicken
Here I gave the (silly) chicken a beautiful rainbow coloured head-dress, because every chicken deserves one! Because of the floral theme these stamps work really well alongside stamp set KC010, and you can see some larger florals here in the background, oversized flowers framing the chicken.
The background was created with alcohol ink on a gel plate and uses stencil PS455 (more on that later) for a less patterned and gentle background. I made it into a 3D stand up card and the she stand is propped up by flowers on the lower edge. I finished off with white paint pen doodles and some glitter for a happy bit of bling.
Keep it funky
Well, I already said that a bird can fit any occasion but I think a fish can too. I love fish but I REALLY love an angler fish. They are just so grumpy looking, and their little teeth pop out in all the wrong places. What is not to love?
Here you can see a close up of the background peeking through using stencil PS455. I wanted a simple all over design so as not to overpower the main focal images.
I added several angler fish to my journal page because I wanted a group, or a shoal or whatever, and topped up the look with a few additional flowers. When you are creating an overall design like this it can be quite useful to cut one image in half and have one swimming in and one swimming out. It gives a sense of continuation.
I overlapped the fish and also used 3-D foam to lift some a little higher for added dimension to the page. A Stabilo ALL pencil is ideal for adding depth and shading to an image (you can see it clearly here), and of course my usual splats, white doodles, and a bit of blingy glitter.
Bloom and Grow
Some larger scribbly style florals just in time for spring. A seed head, an echinacea, a daisy, and some smaller blooms which work great as a space filler. I actually drew these designs initially with a dip pen and ink to keep them loose and scribbly, and you can also see where I added a few additional splats of ink.
This seed head is simple in style but has some lovely 'stripes' for colouring. It looks great in full colour but I really like it when neutral, coloured and shaded with a little grey, over a bright background.
Here I placed a transparency with bright alcohol inks over a simple Infusions background to contrast with the neutral image. The image really pops that way.
Never give up
A real life Echinacea can sometimes look as if it's finding life a little hard (but I do love them!) so I added the quote 'never give up'. It's quote that work well for many occasions or reason and is great for art journaling too. Here the image is placed on a more delicate background using Stencil PS453, and a little more delicate pastel colouring on the flower, leaving plenty of white space.

Vines
I included a stencil, with vines or leaves to however you want to think of it, ti felt the theme of spring and growth and new life. I hand drew them to keep them a little wonky and imperfect. Above you can see a background made with Infusions and a lot of water! And blow I did something a little different ... for me. I made a watery background with In fusions and then singed more Infusions through the stencil in two colours. It's new for me but I like it! Overlapping in different colours means you can build up depth.
And another background with watery Infusions but bright bright bright this time!
And here is a more delicate background made with a pick up print using alcohol ink and a gel plate. Once you get alcohol ink on your stencil it really is the gift that keeps on giving - the more pick up prints you do the more delicate and distressed the background becomes.
Sunflower
DO you know, I think we all love a good circle shape! A circle is a gentle easy shape to work with. No sharp corners, no awkward angles, and it just doesn't argue with anything! This design was based loosely on a sunflower shape, and the central circle makes a great frame.
Above you can see a background made purely with Infusions and a lot of water, and below you can see alcohol ink on the gel plate. I love the random splodges of ink.
And you can see here how the birdies just sit so well in the central frame of a sunflower. The central circle shape is just crying out for an image!
Random blobs!
Here's another stencil drawn by hand to retain its 'imperfections'. When I'm playing and creating and making projects I don't always want a bold clearly defined pattern as a background. Sometimes I just want a 'quiet' all over pattern so as not to distract from my main focal image.
Here you see a pick up print using alcohol ink on the stencil. I used a pale grey to pick up the colours and it gave me a lovely paler distressed look. along with the usual random blobs of ink.
And here I just used Infusions. You can easily create dark and bold if you use plenty of Infusions, or water it down for a pastel look. So flexible.
And here you can see a more delicate pick up print using alcohol ink as a more gentle backdrop for my silly chicken card. Just enough pattern to be interesting without being overwhelming and distracting.
And finally, a different way to create a background. I began with a watery background of Infusions and then sponged paint through over the top using Frescos (Tracy Scott's bright fresco paints of course!) This created a simple all over design for my angler fish to swim through.
I do hope you have enjoyed my spring collection of flowers and florals and birds and silly animals! I had a lot of fun creating them (well, developing them from my many doodles and scribbles!) I look forward to seeing what you all create with them.
Happy spring everyone!
