Hi everyone, Kate here.
Let me introduce you to my latest collection of eight mini stamps and five mini stencils. We all love something small and cute right?! There is everything you need to create backgrounds, build texture and layers, and then add some quirky focal points.
This collection includes funky (sometimes silly!) creatures, foliage and floral as well as background textures, and they all work beautifully together.
First of all, here is a quirky bird delivering a gift of love. Great for cards, journal pages, and even Valentine's Day! Of course mini stamps doesn't always mean mini art. Here I used repetition to create a large journal page with these quirky birds delivering bundles of love in formation form. The world feels a bit topsy turvy right now, so I think we can all do with a bit more love.
Allowing the birds to fly in and off the edge of the page gives a sense of continuity, as well as overlapping and maybe raising one or two with 3-D foam. I added these birdies over a background of brayered Fresco paint (from the Tracy Scott range), and you might spy lots of stamped and stencilled texture added from my previous collections.
Kate Crane Mini 010 by Kate Crane (code: KCM010)
I just love silly chickens. Chickens are comical by nature, the way they move, the noise they make ... just silly! You can use a silly chicken for many different occasions and they are a great addition to cards and tags.
You might just notice that this chicken is layered over the new mini stencil PM003. I printed this background in two colours and then spliced them together. Even the chicken's body has a little extra texture stamping ... from the new mini KCM014
But like I said, mini stamps don't always mean mini art so here is a chicken half mandala, because why not?! This is an art journal page so anything goes. Repeating the chickens and adding them around a central circular print using the new mini means that I can easily upsize this to a larger page.
I placed them around a print using the new mini stencil PM036. Circles always work!
And here we have a wise old owl looking a little serious. Again you might notice a little texture stamping in gold over his body.
I placed him over a print using the new mini PM032, and also layered over a 'branch' using the new very useful foliage mini stamp KCM013. Trim a couple of leaves off and it easily coverts to a branch - a great place for a wise old owl to perch.
Again I wanted to upsize to a larger page but instead of using repetition I placed the owl over a central print using KCM036 Anything circular is a great place to add your image, it frames it so nicely.
This next card has a background of 'bits'. It's a great stash buster! We've all got a large collection of useful bits haven't we?! I know it's not just me.
Here I used up lots of bits from backgrounds made using stencils and Infusions. Cut into narrow strips, overlapped and stitched make a great colourful background for a wise old owl.
Who doesn't love an Echinacea flower? I love them because sometimes they do look a bit droopy and even a little scruffy! I doubled up the flower head here to give it a little dimension.
And if you look closely at the background you might just be able to spot the new mini 'rainbow' stencil PM035.
In this large journal page again I used repetition to create a circular shape with the flower and I was very pleased to discover that the lower droopy leaves created a fabulous central shape. I'd like to say I designed it like that but ... ! I think this would work on an even bigger scale, adding more flowers and taking the circle outwards. Another flower could be place in-between each flower. Maybe I'll try that sometime.
And finally, sometimes the Echinacea can be added as an additional image to a page in more of a secondary background role. Here I placed it in the corner of my journal page where it plays second fiddle to the chicken and it just balances things out. So many uses for a flower!
Foliage and leaves are one of my 'go to' doodles. My daily bullet journal is full of them in various forms and colours, casually doodled while I ponder my day! A sprig of foliage is a fabulous filler stamp, especially when repeated.
Here you can see a close up of the owl perching on the foliage so it appears as a branch, This would make a great place for the silly chicken to sit too.
And here you can see how I have repeated the foliage stamp, and placed it from the top and the bottom around the central focal point. It really helps to fill out the page and balance things out.
Texture stamps! You just can't have enough. They are so very very useful.
Once I completed my Echinacea mandala journal page the centre felt a little empty, so texture stamp to the rescue. I used Fresco Gold as stamps can take acrylic paint as long as you wipe it straight away. It's a great way to fill a space without feeling a little overwhelming. And if you look closely at the backgrounds of all of my latest projects you will see this popping up everywhere.
And sometimes I stamp it in ink over main focal images too; it just fills those little empty areas nicely.
And another very useful texture stamp. This one has more vertical lines and again I often stamp it in ink as well as Gold Fresco as it's such a useful filler stamp, and a wonderful top layer.
One of my 'go to' techniques when building layers and texture on a background is to use tone-on-tone ie: blue on blue, pink on pink etc. You can really build depth and multiple layers this way without things getting too crowded. And just when you think you have done enough stamping you can add a little black to really make the colours pop.
This background stamp has quite bold marks and is perfect for adding top layers. Here I added it to a print using mini stencil PM036. You can see here that its great for scribbling round too.
PaperArtsy Stencils {Mini Size}
Price: RRP €4.90 + VAT
Mini Size: 3.5" x 3.75" (9cm x 9.5cm)
Robust 250 micron mylar designed to offer longevity, deep texture and easy clean up
You can never ever have enough stencils! And when they are small and cute like this they are irresistible! Again, small doesn't mean only good for mini art projects, these little cuties can be repeated over and over to build a page as big as you like. Perfect to use with Infusions. I like to water my Infusions down and build up pattern, or alcohol ink on the Gel Plate for a more distressed look. Once you get messy with your favourite technique you may as well build a few backgrounds and then you'll always have a good selection to choose from for you next project.
PaperArtsy Mini Stencil by Kate Crane (PM032)
Did I already say that I like circles?! Circles just always seem to work as there are no hard edges to clash with anything.
I experimented with gel plate printing and Infusions to create these prints.
And you can see here how I have used it as a calm and lovely place for my owl to perch.
PaperArtsy Mini Stencil by Kate Crane (PM033)
This mini is an amalgamation of my most common doodles. Always flowers of course. But the scallops and crosses and circles, yup! They feature commonly too!
And again this is lovely for adding a few scribbles.
When used as a background, the flower can be placed to one side to subtly balance a main focal image on the other. Because of course you don't always have to have a focal image in the middle.
Ooh circles again! This time a little hand-drawn doodled mandala.
I created a series of prints aiming for a mixture of lights and darks, so that I always have a good selection to choose from. Sometimes you need a calm quiet background, but you can't beat the drama of a print like this with added black!
These prints were made with Infusions, and because they are circular ... yes, you guessed it, they make a great place to add a focal image.
It doesn't matter how old you are, spotting a rainbow is always exciting. Such a wonderful, colourful natural phenomenon. And here is my take on a rainbow in stencil form.
Above and below were created with Infusions. If you water down your Infusions to create prints like these, you can easily control the amount and density of the colour by adding more or less water.
And for a more gently distressed look, I used alcohol ink on the gel plate. And although this is not technically a circle shape, it creates an arch which is still a brilliant place to add a focal image. It just frames it so well.
And at first you may not notice, but in fact this Echinacea is placed in the centre of a rainbow arch. Do you see it?
A spiral is a form of circle, right?! You see? Circles always work!
A spiral is a fantastic place to add an image to the centre, it works as a natural 'frame' and the spiral shape draws the eyes to the centre.
These samples are made with watered down Infusions. You can get such great vibrant colour.
And again, for a slightly more subdued distressed look, alcohol ink on the gel plate.
Once a print has been trimmed down it can be used as a central focal point on a larger project, here as the centre of a journal page. The spiral draws your eye to the centre, where the owl comfortably sits.
Remember these designs all complement each other and work really well together, so you really can get creative. The stamps and stencils might be mini but your projects can be as big and mighty as you like. I do hope you enjoy my latest collection, and I can't wait to see what you make.
