Hi all, it’s Gwen back again with three new hand-drawn stamp sets that I’m super excited about. There are more birds, naturally, as we start with EGL46 which is my Galapagos-inspired set. I had the chance to spend a week in the Galapagos items last fall and it was incredible – I must go back! In the meantime, you can find me making art with stamped Blue-Footed Booby birds all over it. The second set, EGL47, is one that I’ve had as an idea for stamps for well over a year. This is all about Chinoiserie and I’m thrilled with how it came out – so many possibilities! Finally, we have EGL48 which is a bit more graphic and primarily inspired by henna tattoo designs and then evolved into some fun and versatile companion designs. With that, let’s dig into some samples!

Red Rubber Stamps (A5 set)

The Galapagos Islands are famous for the incredible wildlife in general, but the birds in particular are unbelievable. As a self-proclaimed Bird Nerd, I was in heaven. There are so many, lots of which are endemic to the islands, and the birds can be totally different from island to island.

Birdy Art Journaling

On this little art journal spread you can see two of my favorites – the Blue Footed Booby (which can also be Red Footed or Nazca – black and white, or even other types of Boobies that don’t live in the islands.) There’s also a fun, and tall! American Flamingo.

The flamingos are so fun… they were all walking around in groups and it was like watching a dance between a group of four males and four females. This stamp is based on one of the flamingos from a photo I took of that group.

This little guy is my favorite. The Blue Footed Booby was one of the first birds I saw when we got to the water after leaving the airport on Baltra – they look so different in the air! Svelte and fierce as they fly and dive into the water to fish. But on the ground, they’re pretty adorable – the faces! So cute and I love the color of their feet.

There were also Yellow Warblers everywhere, so I had to add one (obviously not to scale with the other birds!) I was also a bit surprised to see how much of the landscape was covered in cacti, so I drew one of those as well.

I designed the cactus stamp so that you can layer it on top of itself to make larger cacti – it’s great if you want to create a scene since it will allow for some variation in the sizes you can get.

Galapagos Penguin Mixed Media Card

One of the other birds that’s pretty famous in the Galapagos Islands is really not even supposed to be there… penguins! I was lucky that we were able to go out in a Zodiac and see several of them both on land and swimming. Another absolutely adorable bird.

I also included a stamp of some of the flowers I saw on the islands – I couldn’t resist having the penguin offer a flower to his mate instead of a rock.

In addition to the others, I added a few Great / Magnificent Frigatebirds in flight. Even though I was there a bit after mating season, I was lucky enough to see a male with his red breast inflated and fully on display. Of course you can make them whatever color you want to really personalize each one.

Eclectica³ Gwen Lafleur - A5 stamp set Nr47 {EGL47}

Next up, Chinoiserie! I have been endlessly fascinated by this Western decorating style that’s inspired by Far Eastern design motifs. Of course, part of the reason I love it is probably due to the prevalence of birds in the ornate wallpaper, fabric, and decorative painting that characterizes this style.

Chinoiserie Tree & Peacock

One of the first things I wanted to do with this set was to draw designs that can be used on their own or layer together. Naturally, I chose a peacock for this, which is a common motif in many designs. I also added a smaller bird since you frequently see smaller flying songbirds included in Chinoiserie.

I drew the peacock and tree both to make it so that the peacock could sit on one of the larger branches. I love how beautifully they pair together!

I also included a larger version of the blossom from the tree that you can use on its own like I did here, or even layer onto the tree for more dimension and variety.

A Crane and a Gilded Sun

This sample is exactly what I pictured in my head before I even started drawing the stamp designs… I have a coffee table book where someone had painted a crane flying in front of a metallic gold circle / sun on a wall that I just love and I was picturing how I could use stamps and paint or gold leaf (like I used here) to get this same effect on paper. So of course, a crane was a must-have for this stamp set.

I’m so thrilled with this crane – you can obviously use it on its own or even make a little flock, but I love how it looks paired with the variegated gold leaf. You can also see that I added a fun little Chinoiserie tree that makes a great accent. I can also picture just using the bunches of leaves for cool effects.

Eclectica³ Gwen Lafleur - A5 stamp set Nr48 {EGL48}

Our last set for today’s release, EGL48, is the one I call Henna Inspired since many of the images were in some way inspired by different henna tattoos. Then I took some of the patterns and the style of the images to expand it into other shapes and add fun little details. I think this is a super versatile set and I’ve loving using it! It also ties in really well with a lot of the images in my previous releases.

Something Fishy

For this first sample, I really just played with some of the stamps from the set. I also wanted to showcase the way I designed the fish image so that it could face in either direction.

I love the fish – the details are so fun and of course, I always love a medallion and there are two here! One larger and one smaller one that can also double as a flower.

One of my favorite things in this set is the pair of patterned bars – they’re so fun for adding linear elements into your work as well as for making borders, backgrounds, and lots more.

Mixed Media Layered Stamps

For this second sample, I wanted to showcase some of the design features that I included when I drew some of these shapes. In addition to the 2-way fish, I also created a scalloped sort of triangular element that’s meant to be able to match up to make a full diamond.

Here I’ve put that piece back-to-back behind the heron (which I love – at least one bird in each set!) and also layered one of the decorative motifs behind it, splitting the design into two pieces so some of it shows on either side.

There’s another fun floral element here and you can see my patterned bars making another appearance for some visual interest along the border.

That’s it for today! I’m loving these new collections and can’t wait to use them some more and start pairing them with my other stamps. Watch out for an upcoming live demo in the PaperArtsy Facebook group where I’ll show you some of the techniques I used in a few of these samples. Until then, Happy Stamping!
