Kate Crane - A5 Stamp Set 015 {KC015}

Let me introduce you to my quirky collection of little characters. I say characters because I'm not really sure what else to call them! Little people? Little creatures? Even I'm not sure. These evolved from casual drawing in my carry everywhere journal, and were originally drawn in fountain pen. They were drawn out in the wild ... on beaches, in cafes .... whenever the time felt right. I'm delighted to now have these in stamp form, and think they lend themselves to many different purposes and occasions.

Party!

A character with both hands raised in the air lends itself so well to any kind of celebratory occasion; birthday, party, a good old fashioned 'well done' or simply to convey a sense of joy in your art journals. And here I also used the Banner from KC017 to include the word party, and added them to a greetings card.

To add colour I used watercolour but left quite a bit of white space. Sometimes a highly coloured character on a highly colourful and patterned back ground can get a bit lost.
This set also includes some very small but oh-so-useful texture stamps and these work brilliantly to bed your image into the page. These little stamps are probably going to take up permanent residency in my pencil case and become my 'go to'!

A bit of luscious metallic gold Fresco junk stamping and a bit of blingy glitter means she's all ready to party.

Christmas Wishes

So, here's a thing. I didn't design these stamps as Christmas stamps but I am a big believer in adding a red glittery hat and calling it Christmas! It works!

This time I used the paper piecing technique to add colour to my character using gel plate prints with the newly released stencils (see more below) This is a fast way to add colour but also adds texture which you just can't get from regular painting.

To make him look even more quirky and a bit more Christmassy, I added fairy wings from KC016 on acetate for a subtle winged look. I placed him (her?! Who knows?!) in a hand cut circle from a gel print. It's hard to get a nice regular circle when hand cutting so I disguised my wonky edges with even more wonky stitching. And again, this became a greetings card.

Oops upside your head!

And now for something completely different. This is larger size journal page and features repetition of the character because as we all know a group of three works well. I used the quote 'oops upside your head' so of course one of them had to be upside down!

I created the background using a brayer and multiple colours and layers of Fresco, and then a lot of sponging through stencils (see more below) to build up pattern and textures. Here you can see those very useful mini texture stamps again. The also very useful 1-5 number row came from KC017 set.

Hands in the air!

Put your hands in the air like you just don't care! This time I hid the character behind a door on an art journal page. At first glance, with the door closed, things look a little tame but when you open the door, Ta-Da! There she is!

Again I used the paper piecing technique to add colour to the image - you can clearly see a heart from stencil 484 peeping through here, from another gel plate print.

And here's the art journal page with the door in the closed position, collaged with scraps of gel plate prints (you can see a heart again!), and bit of old ledger paper. You can also see those mini texture stamps again ... I knew these would become a go-to favourite.

Kate Crane - A5 stamp set 016 {KC016}

Flying fairies, a quirky striped Christmas tree, and a much smaller Christmas tree which can double as a toadstool depending on how you colour it in. Lots of possibilities here for your Christmas cards, journal pages, and even decorations.

Fairy Wishes

What is better than a fairy? A fairy that can fly of course! I added her over a gel plate background with a strip of acetate (DuraLar) which leaves her bouncing and dangling mid-air.

The stripes on her body are quick and easy to colour and again I left some white space so things didn't become too dense. A simple row of three trees (three again!) give her something to hang above.

The background is a gel plate print using stencil 485 (see below) with extra junk stamping with the Fresco Gold as well as plenty of festive glitter.

A fairy good Christmas

Another fairy! I used acetate again but this time to add an extra layer to her wings for a 3-D effect. I used the small Christmas tree but this time I coloured them red which makes them look more like toadstools. But look closely at the bunting along the lower edge. Yep, it's the trees! Paper pieced with a red gel print, and hung upside down to make bunting.

You can see the backgrounds here using the new stencils, but I've also paper pieced again to colour the fairy's dress and wings.

I think that this fairy can appear as standing if you place her on the ground, but here she is hanging in mid air so looks more like she's flying.

I added holes at the top and some cord and ribbon, and I'm going to hang it in my window facing outwards so that passers by can see my Christmas message.

A Christmas mobile

This is a lovely and enjoyable thing to make, and a great way to use your stamps. I had a bit of driftwood hanging around (doesn't everyone?!) and used this as my starter. I coloured lots of images and also used small tags and added scraps of prints.

Initially I used invisible thread to hang the designs but this was complex, time consuming, and ended up in a big knot and a lot of frustration. So I decided to go for acetate which made this a lot easier to put together. It also means you can just keep adding more and more as you feel like - it's a project which can grow.

A couple of things to notice ... The extra stars are the ends of the wands cut off, the heart decoration on the small tags is from a gel plate print, the toadstools are the small Christmas trees but coloured red, and the large Christmas tree has been paper pieced again. This is a fun project that you can really run with.

Peace and joy

Another paper pieced Christmas tree (I think I have been going through a phase!) It's a very easy design to work with because each segment of the striped tree is very easy to cut out. Of course I added top layers of extra stamping and doodling too.

I placed the tree over a gel plate print but also something else. I used acetate again but sponged Gold Fresco through stencil 485 (see below) and raised it with 3-D foam stickers hidden behind the tree. It adds a lovely translucent layer and a touch of festive bling.

Gnomes come in all shapes and sizes! Here we have short, tall, round, and even a row of tinies. There is also a sign to which words or messages can be added, and a very useful tiny row of numbers. Just because. It's always good to have a little extra to stamp on a background.

Cheers!

This lovely short round-bodied gnome is lovely to colour! He has a striped body which could easily lend itself to rainbow colouring.

The background has been brayered with Fresco paints, with a lot of sponging through a stencil over the top, building up the layers (see below)

I added the word 'cheers!' to the sign and just a little shading around the edge. But you could add word or quote, or even personalise it with a name.

You can see repeated stamping of the number row in the background. It's just a very useful filler stamp. Some white doodling, lots of glitter and a very sparkly red nose for Christmas!

Teeny tiny gnome

The row of tiny gnomes would work absolutely great just as a row of tiny gnomes! But I have a very tiny junk journal and I just couldn't resist adding just a singular one to a page. He just fits!

Just a scrap of a gel plate print, and the very useful number stamp and it's done.

PaperArtsy Stencil by Kate Crane 483 {PS483}

This stencil design grew out of a doodle which I very regularly add to my sketches, a loosely scribbled circle with a cross shape through it. I do love an all over design stencil. You can generate so many ready-to-go backgrounds with it.

A gel plate print background

This gel plate print, using alcohol inks,  has already popped up in my samples above. I love the colours and how it looks ever so slightly grungy.

Of course if you use more ink on the gel plate you get a different look. There are so many possibilities.

And if you look closely at the background here you can clearly see the print in use . It made a nice gentle background for my card which didn't distract too much from the main focal image.

Art journal

One of the things I love about stencils is that there are so many different ways to use them. Here I brayered a background first with Frescos, and then sponged more paint through the stencil in random places. I added a bit of extra crayon to really make the most of those circle crosses.

Once the paint has been sponged through and the shape created, you can add lots of scribbling and doodling too, to make the most of those shapes.

I love a heart shape as much as the next person, but I didn't want the shape to be too perfect. I wanted something a little more off-beat, and a little misshapen. I added a few dots too to make it look as if the heart is almost melting.

Heart print

Well my aim was for a slightly imperfect heart shape and I think I got it! It looks nicely grungy as a gel plate print too.

A print like this with an all-over heart pattern works great as a background but you can also cut out the individual heart shapes to use an an embellishment or use small pieces as collage.

I collaged the 'door' on my art journal page with scraps of print and  old ledger and you can clearly see the hearts here.

But you also use the print as a background as seen behind my party character here. I added a bit more emphasis to the heart shape with pastel and white pen to make it more of a feature.

PaperArtsy Stencil by Kate Crane 485 {PS485}

When I'm sketching with a fountain pen I often add simple rows of lines across the page, just as a filler . And I simply enlarged those lines to create this stencil, which is why they have a hand drawn wonky look about them!

Simple lines

Sometimes simple is best. Repeating simple lines like this make a great print and background because the pattern doesn't really clash or distract from a main focal point.

Once you start creating prints with the gel plate you can keep going and make several, that way you always have a background which is good to go!

Adding extra layers on top such as a bit of white pen doodling and some Fresco Gold stamping can really help to bring a print to life, and add depth and texture.

Brayers and sponges

Using a brayer is a fast way to create a background, and works especially well if you keep the layers light, and build up several layers and colours. But it usually needs a little bit more which is where the stencil comes in.

Simply sponging more paint layers through the stencil adds texture and pattern. I usually use the same colours on the top as I used with the brayer, but occasionally I might sneak in another colour just to add a pop!

It makes a a richly coloured and textured background, but it remains subtle enough to place behind an image as seen behind my gnome here.

And finally, don't forget that Frescos are acrylic paints and will therefore sit quite happily on top of an acetate layer (I used DuraLar). Once the paint dries it's pretty much permanent and can be placed over other backgrounds. If you can find a way to raise it with 3-D foam stickers (hide them behind an image!) then the slight gap between layers adds a lovely translucent effect.

Well I do hope .you enjoy my latest eclectic and quirky collection, and can see the many possibilities. I so enjoy seeing all  that you create because you all think of so many different ways to use the stamps and stencils, and make and create things that I would never dream of! So, keep that inspiration coming. I can not wait to see your finished creations and compare it back to the humble beginnings in my sketchbook!
