2018 #14: Baked Texture Journal Layout with ECF {by Chris Dark}

2018 Topic 13: Baked Texture

Somehow in my head I don't expect any kind of baked stuff to be these gorgeous colours, so this is a delight to see Chris head into this  colour palette and Bake!! ~ Leandra

Hi everyone, it's Chris Dark with you tonight, and I'd like to share a journal layout I've created with the fantastic new stamps by Courtney along with two of her new paint colours and Emerald Creek Baked Texture Embossing Powders from Seth Apter.

I haven't chosen a particular technique, I've used a few of the more usual embossing techniques all of which I love for the textures they create and which is what attracted me to this topic initially. Embossing enamel was the product that got me hooked into paper craft and I still enjoy the process.

I found that Courtney's stamps are wonderful for all kinds of techniques. I used them for general stamping in the background with pigment ink, with embossing ink in order to use the powders and again with embossing ink to stamp into layers of enamel for a de-bossed effect. They're great for providing grungy texture for mixed media projects too.

Eclectica {Courtney Franich} Set 02 (ECF02)

I started with plain card and Courtney's new paints Blah-mange and Peach Nectar and added Turquoise, Prawn, and French Roast. One of the pieces of card I embossed with a 3D folder and used all of the stamps over it with embossing ink and the Seth Apter 'Baked Texture' Embossing Powders. I had Patina Oxide and Chunky Rust (which I particularly loved), they work brilliantly with these industrial style stamp designs.

A random sprinkling of Chunky Rust powder over die cuts before heating to show the fluffiness in the powder. I recommend heating the powders from underneath with a heat tool that you've heated up for a few seconds first.

Here you can see that I added some crackle glaze to Prawn paint for more texture which I allowed to dry naturally before I started adding the rest of the colours and all the embossed pieces. I framed some of the die cuts and card pieces with doodling and also with song lyrics.

There are coppery specks in the Patina Oxide Baked Texture enamel which mimics the Verdigris you would see on aged copper or bronze. I'm partial to London stamps and this one inspired the song lyrics I doodled in the background. I've stamped into several layers of the embossing powder then cracked it by bending the card.

I mixed the embossing powders by sprinkling them over the sticky ink so that they merged together and I love doing layouts like this so that I have several techniques on one page and can see the different effects, journal layouts can be a great aide memoire.

I anchored all the card pieces and die cuts to the background by stamping underneath first with the grating stamp (it reminds me of something but I'm not sure what?) A very useful stamp though and I did lots of second generation stamping with it.

I highlighted the textures of the embossing by dry brushing with the Blah-mange paint which is pale enough to give nice results seen here in close up.

Here's one of my favourite embossed pieces with lots of textural interest from the embossed card, more embossing over the top with the baked texture powders and dry brushing.

I had a great session of crafting with these gorgeous products and am delighted with all that embossed texture. Courtney's new colours worked beautifully with the embossing powder colours I chose. This was my first time using Seth Apter's gorgeous Baked Texture Embossing Powders, I have several more on my wish list now and if you have some I hope you'll join us in the challenge but play along with us anyway, it's always great to do challenges and get the creative juices flowing!

Thank you for joining me tonight and I hope you have a creative week.
