2017 #17 White: White Christmas with EKC {by Miriam Grazier}

2017 Topic 17: Shades of White

Miriam has done a sparkly number with her Grunge paste Tonight! Check it out....

Hi everyone, it's Miriam from Miriam's Creative Dreams with you today, and I'd like to share with you two Christmas cards that I have made using Kay Carley stamps and stencils.

I chose this technique because it really put me outside of my comfort zone. I've never thought about how I would describe my art but clean and simple  or white does not enter my definition at all.  I really thought that I would struggle, but after sitting at my work space and looking at my stamps and stencils, the ideas flowed.

Normally, a white card base is covered in at least one other colour, but I really liked the crisp nature of this project and the fact that I could add dimension and detail which kept to the theme of white.

I stencilled Grunge Paste through PaperArtsy Stencil 070 (PS070)

  I had a idea to cover the Grunge Paste in clear glitter - but wasn't sure if this would work - and it did - I was really happy with this result and left it to dry thoroughly overnight.  The snowflakes look glistening!  I'm not normally one to go to the glittery side, but as I was already stepping out of my comfort zone, I thought I would give glitter a chance - and I liked it!! I know that a few friends will be doing happy dances right now!

Even with just a small amount of colour, the crispness of the white stood out and dominated my project.
 Eclectica³ Kay Carley: Set 10 (EKC10)

I used the swirl from EKC04 to sit the tree on.

I discovered that I could use a pop of colour (and in this project I used Zucchini, Hyde Park and Cherry Red Fresco Finish Chalk Paint), and that the white would be the dominant colour on the project.

I loved how I could use texture in the sense of Grunge Paste and glitter but stick to the 'white' theme.  Putting myself outside my comfort zone made me realise how striking and effective a clean and simple card could be.

I enjoyed making this card so much that I made another straight after.

This card followed the same principles as the last .  I just loved using Kay's stamps and stencils.  They worked so well for the Pure Colour theme of white.  The crisp images were just perfect for what I wanted to achieve.

I thought I would struggle with this theme, which is why I chose it.  But actually, I found that I could compromise by adding to the white background using texture.  I decided that it was good to push myself into an area I was not comfortable with - and I am hoping that I can expand on this going forward.  In fact, I plan to make more of these cards for Christmas.

I really hope that I have encouraged you to create a project using this theme - especially is, like me, you feel uncomfortable creating a clean and simple card using a true white colour.  You can see the detail of how I created these cards by popping over to my blog.

Thank you for joining me tonight - I hope you join in with this fortnight's challenge.
