NEW PaperArtsy Products: Lynne Perrella {June 2024}

A note from Leandra:

I have thoroughly enjoyed creating with these stamps, but as I am sure happens to you too, I have so many more ideas to explore than I had time to explore, and I am sure these 'gaze' stamps will capture your heart too!

I know that Lynne often likes the idea of back-to back or face-to-face stamps, and that is something I have not yet achieved with these. I also was keen to cover an entire journal spread 'tiled' like a kind of wallpaper ... in fact how cool would they be as wallpaper in real life!!!

I often get a sense of strong women from Lynne's designs, but with this series, I also sense deeper emotions, perhaps honesty, vulnerability, in an expressions. I see yearning, wistful, sad, thoughtful, loving women - all the emotions we go through as we interact and care for our friends, family, partners, children, loved ones. These women could be your sister, mother, daughter, friend, mentor.

I will be along to share with you LIVE my makes with these new stamps from Lynne over in our Facebook Group, 'PaperArtsy People' shortly after this post publishes, and ... don't forget

These stamps are available EXCLUSIVELY from our approved stockists. Please check the list at the foot of this post to find a retailer online or geographically near you, it makes sense to order within your country where possible. Our retailers also endeavour to join the designer's live to share their direct shopping links - this makes it super easy for you to find a store with products in stock immediately.

“Gaze” Rubber Stamps

By Lynne Perrella

Leading artists of the Renaissance (think:  Botticelli, Piero della Francesca, etc.) established the mania and status for Profile Portraits, and the fascination endures.  Considered a way of affirming prestige, haughty superiority, and familial wealth; an averted look communicated a clear message to the viewer:  “Go ahead.  Feast your eyes.”

Portraits, bronze medallions, embossed coinage and romantic cameos were adorned with notable profiles and these visual traditions persisted into the Art Nouveau, Vienna Secessionist, and Pre-Raphaelite eras. And iconic profile portraits are still turning heads nowadays.

Featuring dramatic profiles illuminated and embellished with intricate patterns and textures, my NEW collection of “Gaze” stamps for PaperArtsy is inspired by all those time-honored art traditions (with a contemporary twist).

Averted eyes, deep in thought, turn away and maintain their mysteries.  Secrets are concealed, coaxing a dozen narratives.  These characters give nothing away – so the artist/stamper is free to develop endless story lines.  Gazing at one another, or looking in opposite directions, these profiles can be used in countless combinations and compositions.  They can be tiled to create an intriguing background, plus bring eyes-on attention to a favorite quotation, or stare dreamily at a journal page of lavish color.  Although inspired by ancient art traditions and secrets, these new characters are fresh from my drawing board --- ready to inspire your creativity.  Enjoy!

PRIVATE

Deep in thought, she offers a connection, heart to heart. I was listening to a podcast recently called 'Wiser than me', and I journaled the words of a piece of writing. It spoke to the concept of women 'holding' onto things, both literally, but also emotionally. From raising children to caring for the home and family, or perhaps even taking on/ holding onto the troubles and sorrows of the world. This image speaks to that heartfelt sense of responsibility, angst and perhaps even the futility of worry. But also the strength of doing all the things as best you can with what you have.

Private was a word I found on a Sara Nauman journaling stamp set, she looks deep in thought. Contemplating her next decision.

Here you can see I used a recent Jofy stencil (PS434, May 2024 release), brayered then pressed onto the background, with white paint pen dots added and a punched centre spot. The original background was a gel printed left over.

I quite liked how the red signo uniball pen (fine nib) worked seamlessly over the painted background, but it seemed a bit too bold. By journalling over the top in the other direction (in white) it knocked the impact back a bit. Also a good way to hide your journalling if you want to keep it private!

THOUGHTFUL

A more minimal starting point with the gel-printed under layer.

The same Jofy stencil was used over and over with different paints throughout these samples. I'm going to drop that stencil design in here from last month so you can see it better - I have basically used it in every sample! The dark blue bits are the 'holes' so this style of stencil si super cool for gel printing and also reverse stencilling.

She looks concerned, yet her doodled hair adds a kind of tribal authority to her, maybe she is a princess waiting for a ceremony to start?

BEAUTY

This is one of the smaller stamps on the plate, I stamped it directly onto some book page.

Mattints in glow or The Pink add some colour to a face to make it differentiated from the blue background.

LOVE

All these backgrounds are quite metallic, Gold was also one of the accent colours, but I tried to use a bold colour palette with strong contrasts - lime green snuck in as a rogue addition.

Notice how using a dark colour in the background allows the face and expression to be the focal.

LITTLE THINGS

Another minimalist gel printed background, she looks so elegant and serene. Notice how the detail on the border is also part of the stamp's edge, to the left.

Scrappy layers, but Mattints offer the perfect cheek-rouge!

8x8" JOURNAL SPREAD

This is the left side (above) of the spread ...

And this is the right side. A subtle background in the journal, with gel printed scraps used as the base for each 'gaze'.

When you look closer, you can see she has wrinkles - that will be the tissue I stamped her on!

Each piece is loosely framed, with a hand drawn rectangle, but also with words;daughter, sister, friend etc

The same orange/white journalling idea was deployed in the underlayers here too.

And I'm sure you will spot the JoFY stencil again, yes... obsessed I was!

FRAGMENTS

The feeling here was fragments of stamps torn from tissue, onto fragments of gel-printed card, and arranged as if the family was fragmented too. There is a lot of non-communication going on here!

The staples felt like something was trying to be rejoined, or pieced back together ... and the separate pieces/ fragments are moving closer, Like continents slowly shifting.... as if reconciliation is maybe looking more possible.

The frame was hand drawn, with the thoughts of each person noted within the border.

The stencil and stamp are both JoFY designs, and similar in style they reminded me of crosses ...which could be cancellation marks or kisses!

No 48

More fragments, but this time a bolder colour scheme: Purple Wine, Peachy Keen, and Bermuda fresco chalk paints. With gold accents (of course). All the gold glimmers will show up in the live, so check out the live replay to see the shine!

Colouring the printed tissue with Mattints is easy, they grow in depth with each layer.

MARY, MARY ...

Working in a series with the same colours allows you to explore, and try mixing up the layers, the order of how you create your gel prints ... and tehn you get to use all those scraps up along the way when you finally pull all the elements together!

There are a lot of stamps on each of these sets and whether used as they are with their frames or as torn section, I really felt a connection with them all.

Thanks to Lynne for another wonderful release, this takes us to 70 stamp sets with her! How cool is that!!
