A note from Leandra:
I don't know about you, but I do have a bit of a thing for birds ... and Kay has created 2 stunning hummingbird designs for this release and lots of gorgeous floral elements to make them feel at home with nectar options nearby! Her stencils and floral stamps are perfect for creating companion elements. These are chunkier designs for Kay - but perfect for journal pages, cards and more!

Kay will be along to share with you LIVE her new products and ideas over in our facebook Group, PaperArtsy People shortly after this post publishes. We do hope you will drop by to see what she has made with these beautiful new designs.
If you are looking for a stockist near you, there is a list at the foot of this post. It makes sense to order within your country where possible.
Hi everyone, Kay here. I have been toying with the idea for sometime of doing some larger scale fantasy type birds, but I kept putting it off as I wasn't too sure how to go about it, or what direction to take it in. In the end, it was seeing a watercolour tattoo, that planted the idea of creating some fantasy style hummingbirds.
To begin with, I knew that I wanted the birds to be decorated with sprigs of flowers, but as I began sketching them, it occurred to me, that it would be great to somehow have the decorative sprigs of flowers separate from the hummingbirds, to offer more creative scope and possibilities.
Within this release I have two stamp sets of hummingbirds - each of these hummingbirds have the option of stamping a decorative sprig into/onto them. (You will see exactly what I mean further down this post), plus I also have a flower stamp set that has been designed to either use with the hummingbirds or on its own. Of course my release wouldn't be complete without some stencils to complement these stamps. Anyway, I am itching to show you my samples so let's go!......
Price: RRP €23.00 +VAT Size:5" x 6" (13 x16.5cm)
All stamps are individually trimmed onto cling foam with a laminated storage/index sheet.
FLOWER FLUTTERBIRD
The sample below shows how I envisaged the flower sprig and bird being used together to create a decorative hummingbird.
You can see how the bolder, open petal flowers (painted in pink) sit within the bird itself and how the wispy delicate stems trail out from the bird.
Notice how the bigger pink flower was designed so that it would sit at the base of the longer feathers on the bird's flank.
FLUTTER BIRD
This shows the same bird without the decorative flower sprig being stamped onto it.
I absolutely love this flower sprig/branch. It's really simple to colour and works equally well when stamped from different directions.
BLUE BLOOMS
Although this flower stamp was designed to be used with the hummingbirds, it works really well as a stand alone stamp.
Though the flower stamp is quite tall, it lends itself really well to being used on a square card.
You can see from the close up photo (below), that each flower is made up from many little flowers that often overlap each other, thus giving a very natural feel to the stamp.
GRACEFUL BELLS
Hummingbirds love bell shaped flowers so I really wanted to have a stamp that a hummingbird could put it's beak into to drink the nectar!
I drew bell shaped flowers, coming out from either side of the main stem, so that it can be used alongside either of the hummingbird stamp sets.
The trailing, frondy bits help to soften the image and give it more interest and movement.
BOBBLY BLOOMS
The stamp set also contains some individual flowers which can either be used to stamp extra flowers on the corresponding big flower stamp or they can be used to create your own flower composition.
I stamped both bobble flower heads from this stamp set and then drew in some stems and leaves. The same can be done with the single bell flower stamp too, contained in this set.
Notice how I stamped and drew some of the imagery so that it is in front of and slightly behind each other. (I often draw in pencil first and then go over in pen once I am happy with the composition.)
I'M IN A FLAP!
This hummingbird flies in the opposite direction to the other one. (I thought it would be useful to design hummingbirds that could be used together to create a bigger style of project, therefore each hummingbird has been sized to correspond with each other.)
You can see how I designed some swirl accents onto the wings of the bird to create a fantasy style of hummingbird, but if you would like a more realistic looking bird, simply paint over the swirls with an opaque colour of Fresco Finish.
This flower sprig/branch has also been designed so that it can be used in different directions/orientations. It looks equally good when stamped coming from the right side of a panel, left side, or from the base.
DO I HUMMMM?
This sample shows how the flowing flower sprig works as decoration for the hummingbird.
When designing the hummingbird, I purposely didn't add too much detail to the main body of the bird, so that it wouldn't detract from the decorative sprig when it is used in this way to add decoration.
Notice how the flower sprig has been designed to fit around the bird's head so that it doesn't impede with any of the detail of the hummingbird.
ON THE WING
This hummingbird stencil is just perfect to create some smaller hummingbirds than the hummingbird stamps contained on EKC67 and EKC69. (It also comes with the mask components of the birds too)
I chose to outline the bird and add details with black pencil after stencilling my colour. These added details were based my on the larger stamp version (from EKC69).
You can see how I built up layers of colour (using stencil brushes) to create shading within the bird.
The picture (below) shows the difference in size between the stamped version of the hummingbird (on the left) and the stencilled version (on the right).
FLUTTER....WING
With this bird I simply stencilled my chosen colours and then painted in the eye.
I used small stencil brushes to achieve the shading to the wings.
I have been finding the stencil flower branch really useful for adding light background layers to some of my samples.
The picture (below) shows the size difference between the stencilled hummingbird (on the left) and the stamped version from EKC67 (on the right). The beauty of having stencil hummingbirds is that you can have them flying in opposite directions by turning the stencil over and using the reverse side :)

BUDDING BLOOMS
The larger style of flowers contained on this stencil were designed to be used with the hummingbirds as well as being a pretty flower stencil in its own right.
I used the right hand design on this stencil and then added some stamped grasses from EKC17.
You can see that I chose to add some dimensional centres to the individual flowers but it looks great without these too.
BLOOM & GROW
For this sample I used the single flower contained on the left side of the stencil.
Using some stamped grasses (from EKC17) provides an ideal background for the stencilled flowers. You can see how I stencilled the flowers first with Fresco Finish Snowflake paint before moving the stencil slightly and stencilling with my chosen colours to provide dimension.
I used a small stencil brush to quickly add my orange centres to the yellow flowers.

BLOOM WITH GRACE
This spray of flowers makes a lovely focal point on a sample as well as looking great when combined with the hummingbirds.
This spray of flowers was created on a 5"x7" card but using only parts of the spray looks great on smaller panels too.
I edged around the stencilled imagery with a white pen to give a nice neat finish but you could also have fun by sketching around the imagery with a fine black pen and adding your own little details and embellishments.
BRIGHT & BOLD BLOOMS
I used the single flower on the stencil to create this easy card.
Having imagery contained on a stencil makes it so easy to create pleasing compositions! I just love being able to flip a stencil over to create a second flower leaning the other way.
Imagine how you could totally transform the look of the imagery by adding some hand drawn embellishments.
The photos below show how effective the flower stencils and hummingbird stamps are when used together.
I have really enjoyed working with this latest release of stamps and stencils and I'm looking forward to creating more samples with them including some larger canvases incorporating both birds together. I really hope that you enjoy working with these designs too.
Love Kay xx

Love your hummingbirds Kay - really good idea with the extra flower sprig. The colours are gorgeous. Also love the blue background for the stencilling - very effective.
