Eclectica³ Collection {Sara Naumann}
January 2021 New Product Announcement
January 2021 New Product Announcement
A note from Leandra:
We do love it when a designer does something a bit quirky, and Sara is going back to the roots of her early stamp collection with a wonderful Journalling set. I think you we see is versatile for so many purposes. Her trademark style is still on point, and I am sure you will thoroughly enjoy all these new stamp designs and stencils. I'm always amazed at her kind of retro colour combos, and effortless looking, kind of minimalist grunge effects. If mixed media is a bit of a new bag for you, or if you want o master tidy-messy, then this is a good starting place! However, I am a long time messy creative, and I LOVE all Sara's designs, so they are certainly not just for a newbie, they tick ALL the boxes!

Hi everyone, Sara Naumann here!
I'm really excited to show you my newest collection for PaperArtsy: Three stamps plus 3 coordinating stencils!
Like many of my previous releases, this collection focuses on nature. During these challenging months of lockdown and restrictions, I've found myself appreciating any opportunity to get out of our tiny apartment and into the natural world—even if that's just the city park. Journaling is the other thing that's kept me going, so amidst the botanicals and text snippets, I've also included words and elements that are perfect for bullet-style journaling—whether you do art journaling, or make your own handmade or altered books.

It's
funny: Many years ago, super-simple handmade books were a real focus
for me and I think I made one for pretty much everyone I knew. I'm
talking about books with easy bindings made with metal rings, ribbons
and clips. Right now, I'm super-into what I'm calling Art Folders, which
are basically decorated paper folders for stashing all the ephemera we
crafty people tend to accumulate. (Or is it just me?) In my mind, these
are a twist on the handmade book theme, as you can fill them with bound
pages or simply tuck in loose treasures for safekeeping.
Let's have a look! Throughout the post, I'm using a variety of PaperArtsy paints, including Lemon Meringue, Concrete, Blue Moon, Frosty, Koala
and Front Door. These are applied with the PaperArtsy brayer and
sometimes spattered with the Ranger Distress Splatter Brush. The touches
of gold you see are from applying foil into spattered wet paint... more
on that with the stepped-out project at the end of this post.
If you want to buy these stamps, they are available EXCLUSIVELY from our approved stockists for the next 6 months. We do not compete with our retailers, so if you want to get your hands on them, check out the list at the bottom of this post!

My
mother really loves ginko and I think of her every time I pass a gingko
tree. Last year I got a lot of inspiration from a botanical park on my
way to teach at a local school (remember when we could teach in
person???). They have beautiful gingko trees in the front of the park,
so of course I picked up some of the fallen leaves to take home and
press. In researching, I learned that gingko symbolises not only
longevity, as a tree can live for a thousand years, but also
endurance—four trees survived the blast at Hiroshima and still survive
today. A fitting symbol for so much that we have had to experience ever
since those days when we thought nothing special about heading off to
work, right?
I
love seashells and have wanted to offer a sea-themed stamp set for
ages, but nothing ever seemed to turn out the way I had in my mind. So
now, I am happy to finally have a big scallop shell with
overlapping script and postal images. In my head, I imagined a vintage
beachside holiday, with handwritten postcards sent home. The nature
quote is a favourite of mine, and seemed to work perfectly when thinking
of strolls along the beach. Oh—and the shell and quote are two separate
stamps, so you can use them together as I did here, or separately.
(Maybe the quote with a lovely gingko?)
The
embellishment you see on the left is made from Ranger's Quick Cure
Clay. This is super-easy to use: Just pull off a piece of clay from the
pack, form a flat piece by rolling it between your palms, then stamp
into it. The clay cures with a heat tool, in about 3 minutes. Let your
piece cool, then you can paint it as I did here.
While
these stamps lend themselves perfectly to Art Folders (keep reading to
see an example further down in this blog post), they can also be used
for cards. In this case, I kept the various elements in the background,
allowing the single sentiments to stand out. The card background could
easily be combined with a quote stamp from any of the other sets, too.
This
stencil offers a lot of versatility, which I really appreciate! You
have the option of using the whole design as a collage background, as I
did on the kraft cardstock—or you can select various elements from the
design. Don't forget you can flip the stencil over and get a mirror
image for the non-word elements.
Oh,
yes—the card focal is another clay embellishment, made using a heart
mould. I then stamped into the clay with the ephemera definition stamp
from ESN49.
PaperArtsy Stencil 219 (PS219)
Here's
what I'm going to say about this stencil: It is by far one of the most
useful tools I have in my stash. The weird little dots are just regular
enough to create an overall pattern, but they also have that
not-quite-perfect look that gives them personality. Stencil a quick bit
of untinted Grunge Paste onto kraft cardstock and you have instant
pattern and texture—perfect for a clay focal that's been stamped with
the large leaf image from ESN47.
The
giant "Notes" is ideal for Art Folders, books, art journals and other
book-related projects like bookmarks. I love the mismatched letters and
how the parentheses sort of frame the word and give it a dash of style,
but don't forget you can mask them off when stencilling too! This
sample is built on a little cardstock folder I picked up at the
stationers' while school shopping. You can surely construct your own
from a die, or simply fold a piece of A4 (slightly larger than 8.5"x11"
cardstock) and add side flaps. Mine is wrapped with twine which secures
around a stamped clay piece.
Project: Notes Flip-Out Art Folder
In
this case, I've made an Art Folder that's basically turned on its side
and flipped inside out. I've positioned the folder (the same kind as I
used for the PS220 project above) to be horizontal, rather than
vertical, and reversed the folder so the pockets are on the outside. On
the inside, I've added another diagonal pocket from a cut piece of
Smoothy, and a brayer-painted pocket. The folder is secured with
twine—on the ends are Quick Cure Clay beads.
First I brayered
the folder inside and out with a variety of paints. I like leaving some
of the white base showing. When the layers are dry, spatter with a dark
paint, then immediately cover with gold foil. Let the paint dry, then
remove the foil.
Now
grab those stencils and Grunge Paste. The Pointy Dots (PS219) is
perfect as a way to start, since you don't have to be too precious about
where they go or if something doesn't stencil perfectly.
Next,
stamp and emboss with the various note-taking images from ESN49, the
script and postmark from ESN48, plus the little numbers image and the
scripty portion of the ginkgo stamp from ESN47. You can think of the
surface like a masterboard, since there's no defined focal element. For
my stamping, I'm using a gray-brown dye ink with clear embossing powder.
And
finally, clear-emboss the Notes portion of the stencil onto kraft
cardstock—just squash the inkpad through the stencil, lift straight up
and cover with clear embossing powder. I tucked that into the front
pocket of the folder.
Thanks
so much for joining me here today! I really hope you enjoy the ideas
and inspiration—and don't forget to pop by the various PaperArtsy places
to keep up with even more ideas. As always, a big thanks to the
PaperArtsy team... now that they're in France, we are (closer!)
neighbours and I can appreciate the massive effort to get these new
releases out in the midst of an international relocation!
