Eclectica³ Collection {Gwen Lafleur}
January 2020 New Product Announcement
January 2020 New Product Announcement
Last
year Gwen released her first 3 stamps sets with us. She has a master
planas she reveals her stamp sets, and in this series, there are bold,
strong images that work really as geometric background elements.
Additionally, the magnolia/bird set gives you softer, larger elements,
and these are all kinds of useful to easily create that special project
feature, as you will see Gwen creates in the pieces she has made for
this introduction.
I'm sure you are going to love making your own magic, and that you will also develop a love for Gwen's really unique and beautiful way of working with her stamps, stencils that she designs for Stencil Girl, and stunning embossing powders from Emerald Creek.

Hi
everyone, Gwen Lafleur here. I'm super excited to share my latest
release for PaperArtsy which includes 3 hand-drawn stamp sets.
This
collection features an eclectic mix of some of my favorite designs and
motifs including plus signs, fish, circles, and flowers. EGL04 is full
of stamps that were inspired by Australian Aboriginal artwork - a long
time influence of mine. EGL05 is the set I call "Magnolias" and was
inspired by the huge Southern Magnolia tree in the backyard of my family
home. You may have seen me use images similar to these before as all of
the designs in this set were originally hand-carved stamps. Finally,
EGL06 is full of lots of variations on plus signs - one of my personal
symbols that I love both because of the association with positivity as
well as just for its visual impact.
Let's take a closer look and I'll share some ideas with each set, and a couple of projects.
New Stamps
Price: RRP £18.74 +VAT
Size:5" x 6" (13 x16.5cm)
All stamps are individually trimmed onto cling foam, presented in a clear hanging bag
with a laminated storage/index sheet.

For
this first set, I thought it would be fun to use the stamps to create
some of my Boho fish. I used lots of Fresco Chalk Acrylic Paints along
with all of the designs in this set to make a rainbow of collage papers
that I could use for the background and focal images. I love all of the
different patterns you can create by repeating and mixing the stamps.
I used my Boho Fish stencil from StencilGirl to get the outlines for the fish - I really like how bright and fun they are with the mix of collage papers and trims, as well as the texture from the collaged and heat embossed "sea plants" on the background.
I also wanted to show how you can adapt this concept to make a card, so I used the same technique with a smaller version of one of my fish (but without all the texture) and I love how it worked for this. My favorite part might be the staggered and repeated border along the top and bottom edges.

I
have always been a huge fan of using circles in my work - even dating
back to my twenty-plus years as a scrabooker. For the Magnolias set, I
thought it would be fun to repeat them to create a kind of medallion. I
love how using the different designs in each section of the background
circle gives you lots of pattern, but the lighter colored tone-on-tone
inks help to keep it subdued.
I
added some of my Boho Bits and Beads from Emerald Creek to accent the
center of the medallion as well as the center of each of the repeated
Magnolia blossoms. It was a fun little pop of unexpected texture that
really seemed to fit well with this set.
Of course, this design also translates beautifully to card-making.
You could do the full circle on a square card, but I liked the half circle going off the edge as well as showcasing the bird (which might be my favorite stamp in this set) instead of the large Magnolia flower.

If
you're at all familiar with my work, then it comes as no surprise that I
have a definite affinity for tribal patterns and motifs. This piece was
inspired by an African mask but done in an illustrative style. I
thought it would be a very cool and yet integrated way to showcase my
Plus Sign stamps - I absolutely love how it all came together.
This stamp set comes with a long border that has five designs that are variations on plus signs... you can keep this intact, or as I did for this piece, you can cut the stamp into individual circles for more versatility. I love it both ways and I really like the way that you can customize a bit to make the stamps work for you.
I really liked the idea of four quadrants in the background, so I took that as the basis for another handmade card and then just used the large plus sign with the scribble circles as the focal point for this one. I love the possibilities for more masculine cards using this set.

Project: Stamped Mixed Media Collage
As
a project to share with you all, I've made a mixed media collage
featuring all three of my new stamp sets along with lots of Fresco Chalk
Acrylic Paint and Smoothy Super Smooth Card (240 gsm.)
First I gessoed
a piece of 9" x 12" illustration board and then painted over it with
Peachy Keen and Pumpkin Soup Fresco Chalk Acrylic Paint. I randomly
stamped some of the images from both EGL04 and EGL06 all over the
background using permanent archival ink.
Second,
I made collage papers. I took several sheets of paper and painted the
backgrounds with different colors of Fresco Chalk Acrylic Paint and then
stamped over top. Note how you can repeat the border from EGL04 and
then flip it over and repeat it again so it's back-to-back, making a
double-sided strip. (Colors used here: Peachy Keen, Pumpkin Soup,
Truffle, French Roast, Gold Rush, Khaki, Lichen, Marbles, and Paua
Shell.)
In the last photo above on the right, I knew that I was going to use a single leaf and one of the wonky circles from EGL04 as part of my focal point, so I stamped those individually so they could be cut or torn when I was ready to place them.

Next
I started to adhere my collage papers onto the board. I added a coat of
Fresco Chalk Acrylic Paint in Caramel over the background, making sure
to leave the edges showing, then started to layer my collage papers (I
inked the edges of each paper with brown and black first.) I used a
matte soft gel medium as my adhesive, but you can use whatever you
prefer when doing collage.
I
added a vintage book page and some rust-dyed fabric scraps to my
collaged background, then as you can see above I started to layer on the
components of my focal point.
I stamped the bird and a few leaves from EGL05 onto a piece of Smoothy Super Smooth Card, colored with colored pencils, cut them out, and then inked the edges.
To
finish I assembled the final parts of the collage, then took some
actual tiny tree branches, positioned them and used an awl to pre-poke
holes, and then stitched the branches to the board using embroidery
floss. I adhered the cut out leaf stamps so they would look like they
were growing off of the branches.
You
could mix this up to use different stamps for the background and layers
of collage paper and change the designs for the focal point to get a
totally different look.
I
just love the texture, dimension, and element of surprise that I get
from bringing natural elements into my work... it really brings just a
little extra something that helps to pull everything together.
(I
frequently collect branches, leaves, pods, and other items when walking
in the wooded areas near my home - you can put them in your oven at
about 150-200 degrees Farenheit or about 65-90 Celsius for 60-90 minutes
to dry them out and kill any critters hanging about.)
That's it for me today... I'm very excited
about these new stamp sets and I can't wait to use them more in my own
work, not to mention seeing how you all use them in your projects.
