2018 #19 Tissue Paper: Travel with Hot Picks {by Corrie Herriman}

 2018 Topic 17: Tissue Paper

This is a great idea! Makes complete sense too! Tissue paper does tend to go quite invisible once adhered to a background, so to reverse the stamped image is clever! Check out how Corrie used this concept to great effect! ~ Leandra

Hi everyone, it's Corrie from MadeByCHook with you today. I'd like to share with you a decorated board I made for the tissue paper topic.

I love using tissue paper in my projects because it is very versatile. I also like the fact that you can buy ready made printed-on tissue paper (by Tim Holtz) or you can get the plain stuff and stamp on it and make your own. Other than collaging it you can also use it to reverse stamped images, which is what I have done in my project. I also decided to use the lovely Hot Pick stamps to make my own tissue paper to collage.

While making this project I discovered that I don't use tissue paper enough! Having made this discovery I have used it quite often since I created this  board and I love it even more now!

So I started with a piece of tissue paper. I bought this at Paperchase and other than wrapping your presents in, it is also very useful for crafting!

I stamped some of the stamps from Hot Picks set HP1802 on it with {Jet Black Archival} Ink. You'll find a list of stockists for the Hot Picks at the bottom of the original blogpost HERE.

The next step was to tear it up! Yes, tear it up; you want irregular pieces to collage on your project. I used a matte medium to adhere it to my board that had a layer of white gesso on it. This process is so much easier than trying to stamp on backgrounds that are sometimes uneven like when you use model paste or something or when you have painted your gesso on a little sloppy!

When everything was dry I used some pieces of Cut and Dry foam and Courtney's new Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylic colours {Surf's Up} and {Twilight} to add colour to my board.

I made sure not to put it on to thick so it wouldn't totally obscure the tissue. You'll find a list of stockist for Courtney's fabulous paints at the bottom of the original blogpost HERE.

To make it look even more interesting as a background I brayered over Fresco Finish Acrylic in {Snowflake}...

... and when that had dried I used stencil {PS034} by Kim Dellow with another piece of Cut and Dry and Fresco Finish Acrylic in {Sugar Plum} to add some pink.

Next, I stamped the aeroplane from the set on the same tissue paper. Here I used it to get a perfect image on the board. Sometimes it is difficult to stamps on boards and canvasses and this technique using tissue allows your stamping to look perfect every time. I also made a point of flipping the image to show how easy it is. You just have to think about that flipping images with text will make the words read backwards.

Again I used matte medium to adhere the planes to the board. They are now all flying in the opposite direction! lol. To finish of my board I added some white pen to the stencilling and a sentiment which is another stamp from the Hot Pick set {HP1802}. I just stamped it with black Archival ink and added some of the same Fresco Finish Acrylic Paint in {Sugar Plum} to the edges to pull the whole thing together.

In this photo you can see how the tissue paper simply disappears when you glue it on you project. Sometimes however, depending on the colours of paint you use underneath it might just show up a little. I just use a marker, in the same colour as the background to go over the edges of the tissue to make it disappear into the background.

A close up of the sentiment, which was popped up with dimensional tape for more interest.

I hope that my project will have given you ideas to use tissue paper too. Just think of using ready printed tissue that you could use in the same way for collaging. I usually knock it back with a thin layer of gesso to make it blend into the background. I also use it for sentiments, especially when art journaling. Sometimes the background is a little uneven and it is difficult to stamp perfectly. By using tissue your sentiment will always be perfectly stamped and if the tissue paper doesn't completely melt away in the background, use a marker to over it in a similar colour as the background and it will disappear! Another tip is using blank tissue but scrunching it up a little as you glue it on your background to get instant texture!

I hope I could inspire you to make something using tissue paper and enter it into our competition ! Don't forget to link your project to the challenge page. I can't wait to see what you come up with!
