A charming idea from Kate in this post. She's moved into the fabric zone and away from Paper to make a wonderful bag as a gift for her young daughter! I bet she's pleased as punch with it too!! ~ Leandra
Hi
everyone, Kate here, sharing a project, which combines my love for
stamping, painting and sewing. My daughter is celebrating her 2nd
birthday so what could be better than a hand stamped purse and tag?
I started by gathering my Fresco Paints and stamping the image on my fabric pattern piece.
Zinski Art Set 20 (ZA20) Stockist list here.
Painting
the images took the longest. Fabric definitely doesn’t ‘take’ the paint
the same way as paper so I took my time and went slow. I enjoyed this
step the most as I find painting details relaxing.
The next step was to assemble the bag with my sewing machine. I found a free purse pattern online and made a few modifications of my own. I chose muslin as my main fabric so that I could showcase the stamps.
When coloring the image, I found using various colors of paint helped to bring the image alive.
TIPS from PAHQ - the finer the weave of the fabric, the easier it is to paint. You can either loosen the paint with extra water, then it sinks into the weave rather that sit on top of it OR dampen the unpainted area with clean water and a clean brush before adding your paint. Practise first, because too much water, and your paint will bleed outside the lines, so it does take a bit to get the balance right.
If the item is something you want to be able to wash, then you will also need to look into mixing a textile medium into your paint. Once dried and heat set, the paint is softer to touch, and becomes permanent onto the fabric too.

This was such a fun and easy project. I loved creating something different than my normal paper creation. Who says you can’t combine different mediums? I challenge you to dig out some fabric and dream up some new uses for your stamps and paints. Maybe a border for an apron or pockets for a dress… the possibilities are endless.
