NEW PaperArtsy Products {Sara Naumann} Jan 2018

NEW Eclectica³ {Sara Naumann} Jan 2018

In this post we are thrilled that Sara is here to share 3 new stamps and 3 stencils. We love her products because they offer the creative mind such a wealth of ways to be used. Sara herself always goes for a striking and bold style that is minimalist with generous white space, which contrasts perfectly with the complex Vintage elements and poignant quotes. ~Leandra

Hi everyone, Sara Naumann here to show you my newest stamps and stencils designed for PaperArtsy.

This year I moved to Hamburg, Germany, and I realize now how much of the city is coming out in my art. Hamburg is a striking combination of urban living, with street art and a bohemian vibe, alongside beautiful garden spaces and impeccably-maintained old buildings. It’s a city of contrasts, almost a collage in itself. Much of my work is taken from photographs I’ve taken around town…while waiting for the U-Bahn or walking to get my daughter from school. The leaf images are real leaves I picked up from the sidewalk, the birds are all from my city photos, and the collages are made with postage stamps I found while digging through sale bins at antique bookstores. I also realize how many of my quotes and sentiments are meant to encourage and express love—I think this is something we could all use a bit more of, don’t you?

Today there are 2 blog posts to enjoy, from myself and Nikki ActonI really love Nikki’s work—her sense of color and attention to detail is spot-on. I learn something or get a fresh idea with every project I’ve seen from her, so I know you’ll be as inspired as I was when you see what she’s come up with. Our blog posts will publish within 30 mins of each other, so hang around to see what she has done with my new stamps and stencils.

Let's start with some ideas with each of the new products.

Eclectica³ Sara Naumann Set 23 (ESN23)

I love this Constant Heart collage stamp so much…it’s great to stamp on it’s own, but I love the layering possibilities, too. The image is stamped onto a swish of London Bus painted background, then layered with just the heart stamped and clear-embossed for gloss and texture.

I once found a snippet of text in an old book that described someone with “a constant heart”. I love the idea of a steadfast and loyal heart being described as “constant”, and I thought the words would be perfect to incorporate in the design of the collage.

Eclectica³ Sara Naumann Set 24 (ESN24)

I’m a big fan of re-collaging collaged images, so here I've cut apart the large collage element to layer it onto the stamped word. The blobby sort of background is made with Slate and accented with gold foil.

The stenciled bit is from PS091, stenciled with Grunge Paste and sprinkled with glitter embossing powder.

Eclectica³ Sara Naumann Set 25 (ESN25)

This stamp is one of my favorites because of its size and detail—it can be a singular focal on your work, or you can combine it with other elements, cut it apart and layer it or add texture to the background with paint.

In this case, I used a stamp positioner to stamp the image once with black ink, then kept the stamp on the positioner, cleaned it and re-stamped it with embossing ink so I could add clear glitter embossing powder.

PaperArtsy Stencil 090 (PS090)

This checkerboard stencil comes straight from a black-and-white tile floor in the hallway of an old building here in Hamburg. Because the tiles are not perfect—they’re cracked and chipped and worn from over a hundred years—they make a beautifully shabby chic look when combined with metallic foil.

For the stencil, I used my finger to apply PVA (white craft glue)through the stencil, then lifted it and placed on the metallic foil. I let the glue dry, then pulled off the foil.

PaperArtsy Stencil 091 (PS091)

This row of leaves came from a single leaf I found on an autumn sidewalk, and which seemed so perfect in it’s symmetry that I had to tuck it into a book and carry it home. Just one leaf would make a pretty accent, but a whole row makes an easy background. I think next time, I’ll turn the stencil sideways and create a vertical row of leaves.

The stencil works perfectly with paint—in this case, Fresco Finish Mermaid—and with some light green embossing powder sprinkled into the wet paint.

PaperArtsy Stencil 092 (PS092)

This stencil features more of the cracked tile floor from PS090, but larger. (You can tell I loved this floor, right?) I think things that are imperfect are beautiful in their irregularities and quirks, and this is just such an easy way to add interesting texture and design to your work. In this case, I only used a portion of the stencil design, skipping over sections as I stippled Fresco Finish Stone through it.

The texture of the stencilled design also picks up some of the gold glitter embossing powder that I sprinkled into the wet Fresco Finish Slate paint that I blobbed on as the first layer. The #loveyou stamp is from ESN24.

Here are a few more ideas...

Project One: My Heart

You have to give credit to Jane Austen for simple, sincere statements that stand the test of time. This quote is so lovely, I wanted it to be the focal of this card. But, I also wanted something simple and striking to be the background. Let’s take a look at how to use this sentiment from ESN25...

For my base layer, I spattered watery London Bus on white cardstock, then edged it with Baltic Blue. You can spatter as much or as little as you want—the more water in your paint, the less intense the color.

The background behind the stamped sentiment is a mash-up. I first swiped on a bit of Baltic Blue, let it dry, then stamped and gold-embossed the text along the edges. I stencilled the tiles from the PS090 stencil with GrungePaste and when it dried, I skimmed over the top of the raised design with glue stick, put gold foil on top and let it dry, then pulled off the foil to get a grungy metallic shine.

Oh, and all the blue bits in here I used as mats are painted with BalticBlue.

Project Two: Brave One

I love this quote from Walt Whitman—it reminds me of how so much in nature is absolutely miraculous when you think about it…I think these kinds of miracles are really evident in symbols like birds and leaves and feathers. They can be little reminders that the world does indeed hold great miracles. Here's a combination from PS091 and ESN24...

To start, I brayered Mermaid onto white cardstock. (Mermaid is my absolute favourite color in the world and just looking at it makes me happy.) I stamped the sentiment with black. The focal is from PS091, stenciled with Slate onto cardstock brayered with Stone.

I then stencilled the large leaf a second time and cut it out, then edged it with Mermaid. The small feathers and postmark are from the feather collage from ESN24.

Project Three: Brave One ATC

This is an ATC size—although I never got into trading ATCs, I love them as stand-alones, perfect to simply hand to someone, tie on top of a gift parcel, or add as a card focal. I like the challenge of working with a smaller size, too.

The base piece is a swish of London Bus—the best red paint, ever—mounted on a piece of Mermaid cardstock. The stripes are from the PS090 stencil. I placed it on white card, pressed an embossing inkpad through the stencil, then lifted it off and sprinkled with black embossing powder. The heart is from ESN23 and “brave one” is from ESN24. The heart is stamped on Mermaid, then cut out and added with foam tape.

I then stencilled the large leaf a second time and cut it out, then edged it with Mermaid. The small feathers and postmark are from the feather collage from ESN24.

Thank you so much for joining me tonight (or this morning, or afternoon, wherever you are in the world!). A big thanks to Leandra and Mark and the PaperArtsy team who work so hard to make sure we have high-quality supplies forour creativity. And thank you to Nikki, who will share her takes on these supplies too!

Take care,
Sara
