2015 Topic 13: Time
Hello, Joanne here - delighted to be joining PaperArtsy today to play along with the theme of "time"! I had loads of ideas but decided I should take the hint and finally get round to altering the clock that's been in my stash for longer than I care to remember. It cost a couple of pounds from Wilkinsons and they still have similar clocks if you fancy having a go at a bit of time alteration of your own.
I started by pulling the clock apart and giving the frame a light sanding so the plastic had a bit of tooth to it and then smeared on some Grunge Paste. I tapped the wet paste with my finger to give it a rough texture and left it to dry thoroughly. It takes longer on plastic than if your substrate was absorbent so wander off and have lunch, cut the grass or walk the dog!
Once the textured paste is dry, it's time to pull out the Fresco Finish paints. I gave the whole thing a couple of coats of Chocolate Pudding as a base and once that was dry I did some dry brushing with Pewter and then Bora Bora. All the paints will benefit from a good shake before use but pay particular attention to the Pewter to make sure you get all that metallic goodness evenly distributed through the paint.
Stamping on tissue paper is such a useful technique when you have any sort of 3D or textured object. I stamped and heat set images from Hot Pick 1206, added touches of colour with markers and then used Snowflake (mixed with just a dot of Chocolate Pudding for some areas) on the back of some parts of the images. Satin Glaze is perfect for attaching the tissue, just spread on a layer and gently smooth the tissue down with a brush dipped in more glaze. I used a metallic gilding wax (Treasure Gold Silver would be a great choice) to add a little highlighting to some areas of texture.

I made the clock face by cutting a circle of card and dabbing on a mix of Bora Bora, Snowflake and Satin Glaze Fresco Finish paints and, while it was still wet, laying over tissue paper that had been scrunched and then smoothed out. Once dry, I sanded over the piece to get a sort of marble effect. I finished by adding the quote and image, again using the tissue technique. The two gents have been given charcoal pencil shadows and a dot of Enamel Accents marks the 12 o'clock spot.
Taking something boring and utilitarian like this cheap plastic clock and doing your own thing with it is very satisfying. I love the organic texture of the Grunge Paste on the frame and had fun getting different opacities by adding paint to the tissue paper stamping.
Thanks, and hope you feel inspired.

Welcome and thankyou Joanne. We love the texture on this clock frame, which is brought to life with layers of paint. Dry brushing is such a crucial element to many designs; and when done beautifully as in this case it really makes for a professional finish.
Heads Up! : Leandra will be demoing at Birds in the Barn, Marks Tey, Essex tomorrow 10am - 4pm, so if you are in Essex or nearby, do drop in to say hi. She will be predominantly using paints and Hot Picks, but is open for requests!
