Linda Cain #2 .... Believe Journal Page

"I decided I needed to do something different, so I got out the Portfolio Water Soluble Oil Pastels and my Ranger Journal. This journal has great thick, white pages that are perfect for mixed-media journaling. So if you love BRIGHT colors….then this is a page you should enjoy, because they are wonderfully gorgeous! The difference here is that the stamped image of the Balloon Boy will be a part of the page, not the sole reason for it. Since I used white pens to draw over the image to bring it together, it isn’t supposed to be “perfect” so to speak, more artsy. Hope you understand what I’m going for here"

I started with the upper left corner using Yellow, Yellow Orange, and Orange.

These pastels are designed to be blended after you lay them down, so just block in some color. Then I added Red Orange and started to blend them into each other with my finger
Working our way down the page, add some White as a base, then True Blue around it, and blend.

 {See how the Red Orange and the True Blue create a Purple when blended together}

Now it starts to get interesting. I added True Blue, Red and Rust in the lower corner. The top right has True Blue and Cerulean. Moving down the page I added Red Violet.

Keep adding colors, a bit of Green and some Yellow, until you’ve filled the page. Blend it in well with your finger, or as my friend Kelsey calls it “your transdermal applicator”, making sure you get all the paper covered. If you want a lighter area, add white and reblend. Last add a few scribbles of black for contrast and interest.

When you’re happy with the background, spray with a sealer to keep the Pastels from smudging. I used Super Seal by Creative Imaginations.

I wanted to use some stencils as part of the background, so I used the Gears and Distress Ink Ripe Persimmon, Seedless Preserves, and Walnut Stain in a couple of places. Heat set again.

Then I started adding stamps with Jet Black Archival Ink.  I used the "Balloon Believe" stamp from LynnePerrella 018 as the main image, with the Gears Mini 60 and Numerals Mini 22 as fillers. The Script Mini (74) was stamped using Coffee Archival Ink

The next layer is Snowflake Fresco Paint added to the Mixed Media stamps Chickenwire and Dots. Be sure to spray water on your stamps ASAP when done to keep the paint from drying on them.

Then I tore strips of Tissue Tape into pointed pieces and added to the page to add some lighter areas of interest.

This needed something around the edges, so I used the leaf from the JOFY 09 collection all around the edges of the page.

Now the white and black pens come out. I added black circles around the white dots and lots and lots of white around the leaves, the numbers, and the balloon.

White scribbles were painted here and there to break up the color, too. If you look closely at the balloon and tissue tape you can see a gray pen shadow added.

This is bright, and I like it. Just remember this is a journal page that is basically for color. The picture of the stamped image is secondary. I tried another page with Versafine Black Onyx, but it didn’t show up well enough for me although I love both pages.

So stamping on the sealer I found the Archival Ink best, although you could also use Staz-On. It’s all a matter of choice.

That’s it for today. Hope you try the Portfolio Oil Pastels; they can also be blended with water, unlike many other Oil Pastels!

Join me again tomorrow evening ....

Leandra Says: How fab are portfolios!! So bright, and if you don;t want to seal before stamping, you can also zap with a heat gun and the wax sinks into the paper allowing you to stamp over the top! We just got another order of these portfolios in this week! Great timing Linda!!

Gillian Says: I'm in awe of this journal page, so much detailed captured in the layering of colours and stamped images. Awesome Linda!

  7. Linda, just an observation. I think it would a good idea if you displayed a photo of the finished piece so we can see it in all its glory.

I've just been and looked on your own blog and it looks stunning but there isn't one on here.

  8. Wow, that is stunning (like Sam I went to Linda's blog to see the whole piece - and it would be great to have it complete here as well).
I'm not sure I am brave enough to create a piece like this - mine would end up a mess, and not perfectly balanced like Linda's (I am hopeless at composition)
