Helen Chilton #2 Sewing Room Door Hanger

"Today I've got my sandpaper out again as I wanted to see what the paints looked like sanding from light to dark and from dark to light. I've used a wooden door hanger for my base.
I did try die cutting some large shapes from mount board to make signs but when it came to the sanding part, it took off the top layer of mount board as well. This could be got round I would think by whacking a coat of Satin Glaze varnish onto the mount board first so it's not so porous and liable to become soggy".

This is going to sand down from a light paint layer to show darker colours underneath.
Put a base coat of Snowflake white on and then paint with Lilac, Guacamole and Mermaid, scraping it on with the credit card.

Next cover over with white again then stamp using Hot Pick 1213 and ID03.

Stamp a collage in StazOn Ink Jet Black onto white Crackly Tissue Paper, flip over and paint the reverse and stick to the door hanger while paint is still wet.

Next add stamping using Distress Ink pads (Peeled paint and Broken China).

And then sand back hard to show some of the colours underneath.

Add painted embellishments to finish.

Here is another hanger this time with a masculine feel to it.

This was a fun project to do, if you would like to join in with my challenges this week, click HERE to share how you have been inspired.

Leandra Says: I think for Mothers' Day you should have been given one of those 'mouse' electric sanding machines! (I call them boys' toys) and then you could sand without any effort. But I guess that's the lazy route! LOL

Gillian Says: Hard to choose a fav, love the effect from the paints, inks and that trusty sandpaper! Another brill project!

  3. They are both great, with such different effects. I'm not good with sandpaper though (can't stand the feel of it), so I won't be trying any hard sanding...
