2018 Topic 18: Stamp Platform Techniques

Anneke De Clerck

Well hello everyone, Leandra here with another topic. I'm back on board here letting Darcy crack on with her final year of university! So a massive thanks to her for doing the blog topic intros since we started topics in this manner back in 2015 can you believe!!

This time we are looking at the fabulous art that can be created when you use handy tools, and the tool creating the biggest buzz over the past 3 years are stamping platform.

Not without controversy if you follow the politics on this piece of apparatus, the Misti (which was awarded most innovative product at the Creativation/ CHA trade show upon its launch a few years ago) has subsequently been fighting its trademark against the Tim Holtz/ Tonic version ever since in the USA courts. Each tool has their own dedicated tribe.

Indeed there are now numerous knock offs of the concept, many originating from Uk / EU companies too.  So consequently, there are many, many different brands available now, in an assortment of sizes, but they all work in pretty much the same method. I have even seen people make there own by hinging various pieces of acrylic, an Ikea hack I believe.

Whatever your preferred brand,  I hope you enjoy these examples, and if you are yet to buy a stamp platform then perhaps seeing how well they work will make you want to have one. I have heard many people who struggle with dexterity issues say this tool is a life saver, and also for large stamps, it makes those blank spots a thing of the past. There are also plenty of techniques that allow you to stamp an image in ways that would not be possible with a stamp positioner or lining up 'by eye' so if you want to know more about the options they allow, then do follow this topic!

I suggest you follow each of the links back to the blog or site they are from, only then will you see how the platforms have actually been used, though I have included lots of videos to get you started too.

Before we start, let's see who won the Topic 17: Box of Eggs Colour Challenge...

The winner is: Julia from Azenor Artwork who created a lovely piece using Scrapcosy stamps and some grogeous pastel shades of Fresco Paints! Here's her post, take a look!

There are many techniques that can be done using the stamp platforms, one is that you can  stamp your image lightly, then colour your image and finally stamp again to reinforce your outlines. Click Miriam's name to see how she did this.

The next technique is a bit more involved but is very clever and means that you can create a circle with your image.

Just look at this huge stack of cards! we have all been there, faced with a mountain of stamping to do as Christmas comes around. This blog post shows how you can set up your stamping platform and create in a production line, achieving a greater amount in less time, because of accurate stamping and no time spent on positioning for each card.

Using a stamp platform means that you can restamp your image over and over in exactly the same place, this means that if you have an uneven surface such as linen card or fabric, then you can keep on inking and stamping until you achieve an clear imprint. This stamped bag is just stunning! This same technique works on any uneven surface, including layered papers and paint ( see Anneke's  card at the top of this post)

Our next technique is double embossing, this video shows just how easy it is.

This technique is all about transferring colour, in this video you will see how colour is added tot he stamp, transferred to the paper and then blended out, more colour is transferred and blended to build up the image.

Another technique, often forgotten about is mirror stamping, it can sometimes be tricky to do, but the stamping platform really helps.

Another example of the mirror image technique here in a video for you.

Many stamps on the market now are layering stamps, that is they are several parts of a stamp that build up into a final image as you use varying shades of ink. Accurate stamping, achieved by using a stamp platform, means these layering stamps have become so much easier to use and get right first time.

A final technique and video shows how a fantastic ombre affect can be achieved, this is a great result and can look like a professionally printed card.

Fantastic techniques I think you will agree, and our guest bloggers have even more in store for you over the next 2 weeks, keep tuning in to pick up some great tips on using this really handy tool. Have fun!

Don't forget to follow Darcy and Leandra's Pinterest boards if this topic pushes your buttons, you will see plenty more examples to whet your appetite there! I am really looking forward to seeing what you create over the next 2 weeks!
