2018 Topic 14: Baked Texture {Topic Introduction and Challenge}

 2018 Topic 14: Baked Texture

Well hello everyone, Darcy here, time for a new topic, this time we are predominantly looking at Seth Apter's latest crafty product... Baked Textures. Actaully, we do have a baked texture posts to share that offers an alternative interpretation to Seth's products...so it is not exclusively a theme restricted to his new line of powders.

Seth's embossing powders are  relatively new products that have captured the imaginations of crafters worldwide, not just your average embossing powders they have produced some fabulous pieces of art so far.

Before we start, let's see who won the Topic 13: Colour Challenge
with Mint, Sage, Claret and Gold...

The winner OF THE £50 PaperArtsy voucher is: Rachel from Arty Beginnings

Email Darcy to claim your prize. Darcydotneedles@gmail.com

As these products are so new, I felt the best person to ask about them, would be the man himself. So this is Seth's description:

Baked Texture embossing powders for artists from Emerald Creek are not your grandma's embossing powders. Think artisan blends, surfaces that range from gritty and rough to shiny and reflective, textures that run from chunky to smooth, and opacity going from translucent to fully opaque. Of course you can use them as you would any traditional embossing powders. But Baked Texture was developed to also add layers and dimension to your mixed media artwork. Create chunky frames around the edges. Make a faux encaustic surface. Embed objects. Add texture to your substrate. Create a faux wax seal. And more.

Seth Apter
Here is a video of Seth demonstrating the powders at Creativation 2018.

The first release consists of seven unique blends, let's look at each one.

Vintage Beeswax is a fully translucent blend of multi-toned yellows, browns and clears which fuse together to add an antiqued look to the surface. With full coverage, the effect is faux-encaustic.

This is a mini album for storing dies, the front cover is finished with Vintage Beeswax, it gives it a lovely antiqued feel.

See Sara Naumann work with 2 of the baked textures to create a layered card.

Patina Oxide is a mix of multi-hue green and copper chunks to create an oxidized patina mimicking naturally aged metal.

This piece has lots of textures going on, but the lovely green patina oxide edges really bring it all together.

Nikki Acton
A gorgeous card, topped with Vintage Beeswax first that gives a wonderful sheen, then the edges are coloured with Patina Oxide, which really packs a punch.

Julia Aston
Rocky Road is a highly textured blend of black, grey, taupe, silver and clear powder that creates an extremely rough, dimensional and textured surface with a sheen.

This card shows how the Rocky Road powder really does look like thick asphalt'tarmac on a road. How striking is it? the leaves really pop against this fabulously bold powder.

Susie Bentz
The inky blackness of Rocky Road stands out brilliantly against the blended background colours on this tag.

Linda Cain
Chunky Rust mixes orange, brown red, and metallic powders and melts with a matte, rough surface flecked with subtle metallic glints. The feel of the powder is soft and fluffy - unlike any other embossing powders.

The chunky rust on this sample looks just like real rust!

Rachel
The embellishments on this scrapbook page are equally rusty!

Glenda Drake
Dirty Sand is a blend of soft and rich tans, brown and clear powders with a touch of black that combine to give a rough, sand-paper texture and a touch of sheen. Think a stroll along the beach.

Dirty Sand is used to great effect in the background of this card, with other flavours used on the embellishments.

Pam Bray
Another card this time using Dirty Sand.. as sand! So effective and much lighter in appearance than many of the other examples.

Jenny Marples
Deep Sea is a subtly translucent, smooth, liquid looking blend of deep blue, green and clear powders with a high gloss finish that catches the light.

This panel uses several of the flavours but it is the swathe of Deep Sea running down the centre that caught my eye, what a wonderful base on which to fix embellishments.
Gwen Lafleur
Wow! look at this piece, so many details, but the Deep Sea powder set into texture paste really stands out.

Jackie P Neal
Ancient Amber is a honey gold toned powder, mottled with translucent orange yellow and flecked with black tones, like fossils trapped in time.

Another video for you now, here is Raquel with a great review and test samples of some of the powders including Ancient Amber.

This pieces uses Ancient Amber  with some areas fully melted, some partially melted and others not melted at all, what a great combination.

Julie Short
This canvas utilises several of the baked textures, overlapping and building up layers to create fabulous depth.

Nicole Wright
The storage box is great, but go and see all the samples that are put onto tags to go in this box. So many useful ideas.

Just released,  I imagine by popular demand is the huge jar of Vintage Beeswax at a whopping 120g.

A snippet of gossip for you now, as there are new blends in development, no release date for those yet but it is hoped they will all be released by the end of the year. How exciting, something to look forward to, I am sure they will be added to many Christmas wish lists.

One final example from Seth himself, if you click through to his blog you will discover how he makes Baked Texture Skins.
