2018 #9 Vintage Neutrals: Modern Vintage Panel with Urban Snapshots {by Lauren Hatwell}

2018 Topic 9: Vintage Neutrals

Lauren is rocking the neutrals in this post with a gorgeously subtle background that you could take in all kinds of directions.Starting dark, then adding light layers seems to be her trick to get that lovely depth under the neutrals! I love it! ~ Leandra

Hi everyone, it's Lauren here. I love all things vintage and it was awfully tempting to put together something classically vintage for this topic as I do have a lot of vintage ephemera around the place from my parents and grandparents.  Then I came across the phrase Modern Vintage and I thought it would be fun to see if I could represent that in my project.

To me, modern vintage would probably be the 70's and 80's so I put together a muted colour palette and thought about textures, world events, things we worried about and things we were influenced by in the 70's and 80's... I was aiming for a feeling from that time.

I love this Urban Snapshots set of stamps (USPT4 : Urban Snapshots: Passing Time Set 4). It's perfect for the feel I'm after.

I also used Mini's 76 and 72

I think these colours are great together...

I really like the way the grunge paste splats almost suggest a map.... I let the paste dry out a little to get that rough texture. I've got a new pot of paste so it's actually lovely and smooth. If you let it dry out for ten minutes or so on your craft sheet you get a much thicker chalkier texture.

I really like the contrast of the metal stars alongside the plaster-like background and the edgy stamped image of the girl with her graffiti-like backdrop of words.

Gotta love a bit of crackle... I love the way the paint has picked up just a little on the edges. As before, I wanted the stencilled frame to be quite rough and aged so I let the grunge paste dry out a little bit before applying it through Scrapcosy's PS064 Stencil...

...which is one of my favourites. The paint accentuates the crackle and the rough texture of the paste beautifully.

I always love playing about with layers of this and that. I confess I loved my background SO MUCH, I found it extremely hard to cover it up.  I rag rolled the background. Something I've not done for YEARS! A really nice effect though. I like it.

I've really enjoyed this topic and it's been interesting to think laterally when approaching it. The neutral colour palette is not something I'm usually drawn to but it was fun to explore it and it made me focus more on textures.  It made me wonder if I could make anything look vintage just by using certain colours. It's definitely something I'd like to experiment with; vintage Zinski's perhaps! Vin-ski's!! LOL

What's YOUR vintage?

  3. Really really cool!! I love the pared back colours and all that texture. Rag rolling makes me shudder thinking back to the 80’s- but glad you’ve made it cool again! x
