2016 #22 Alcohol Inks on Yupo {by Helen Chilton}

2016 Topic 22: Alcohol Inks and Pens

Hi everyone Helen here. Tonight I'd like to share with you a post about alcohol inks and Yupo paper.

Yupo paper, which is a synthetic surface, comes in various weights from lightweight 110g to card. I've used the paper for the background and card for the lovely snowman from JOFY 48.

It produces interesting background effects with alcohol inks and blending solution. I've also used the alcohol inks to colour the snowman, taking advantage of the fact that the Stazon ink will react with the alcohol ink and run to add a greyish shadow. And lastly I ironed the Yupo at the bottom to create a textured snow effect.

Step 1: Drop your alcohol inks - I used Ranger Purple Twilight, Turquoise and Patina - onto the Yupo paper:

and then drop in some blending solution and let it do its stuff:

Step 2: Leave it a while to mix and blend and then add more alcohol ink and more blending solution as you wish. You can go back weeks later to a piece when it's all dry and reactivate the inks with blending solution and more ink.

Step 3: Next stamp the snowman onto the card weight Yupo in StazOn. Add some Patina alcohol ink to a cotton bud and add colour, also pulling out the grey from the inked outline to create shadows:

Step 4: Iron a strip of Yupo paper between sheets of baking parchment:

The Yupo shrivels and creates interesting textures. (You can also heat Yupo with a heat gun to create texture but the paper curls up more and won't lie flat.)

Step 5: Add background stamping with archival inks and layer up card:

This background has to be one of the most fun techniques I've used all year - you're never too sure how it's going to turn out but you really can't go wrong as you can just keep on dropping in alcohol inks and blending solution until you're happy. It's certainly rejuvenated all those alcohol inks that were lurking in the back of the cupboard!

So come on, get them out and have a go!

Great stuff Helen, I am sure lots of us bought Yupo paper and have yet to use it. These are fab ideas and so easy to achieve these amazing effects. The Jofy snowman looks wonderful against his bubbly background. ~Darcy
