2016 Topic 13: Paper Piecing
Hi everyone Emma Godfrey here.
Tonight I'd like to share with you this evening with a post about paper piecing.
For me, paper piecing brings to mind patchwork quilt effects but using paper instead of fabric. I've decided to use a simple triangle shape for my patchwork pieces, and to make the project a piece of wall art using an IKEA Ribba frame.
Step One: Measure the aperture of your frame. This one is 12cm x 17cm, so I cut five strips of Smoothy card, each 4cm x 21cm.
Step Two: I made my backgrounds using Infusions - A Bit Jaded, Lemoncello, Are You Cerise and Emerald Isle. I sprinkled a mixture of colours onto two of the strips, sprayed them with water and then blotted them with a paper towel (this creates a softer effect). For the other three strips I dragged a single colour of Infusions and Pearl Glaze over each of them (this creates a gorgeous wood effect).
Step Three: On the blue/green sprayed strip, I stenciled circles using The Crafters Workshop Mini Circle Grid stencil and Fresco Finish Snowflake paint.
I then stamped and heat embossed that strip and three others using gold, white and neon pink embossing powder.
To co-ordinate the pieces I used gold and white Extra Fine Sharpie Pens to colour in some of the detail.
I then stamped and heat embossed that strip and three others using gold, white and neon pink embossing powder.
I used EM23 (the flowers),
EM21 (the triangles),
EM19 (the leaves) and
EEG07 (the small pinwheel circle - on top of the stencil circles).
Step Four: On the back of each strip I marked at 4cm intervals along both long edges (starting one of them 2cm in from the short side). I drew lines to join the marks up into triangles, and cut them out. It was at this stage that I decided the neon pink embossing powder was just too bright, and I resprayed a new strip and left it undecorated. Once all the triangles were cut, I edged them all with Treasure Gold Brass.
Step Five: Cut a piece of card 4cm larger than your aperture. Draw on grid lines (ie. there should be a 2cm border all around) and then arrange your triangles. When you're happy with the layout, move them to one side and apply red double sided tape over the entire area. Stick your triangles in place, and then fix your piece of card to the aperture.
Step Six: To finish, stamp and heat emboss (with gold embossing powder) your quote onto a spare piece of Smoothy (I used a quote from EEG18).
Here's a close-up of the finished project…
I really enjoyed making this frame, and I love using the Infusions - they give such pretty and varied backgrounds. I think this idea could work really well with hexagons (for a more authentic looking patchwork effect), and also you could stick each of shapes down individually and leave a small white border between each one for a different look. I hope you like it too ... if you're inspired, I'd love to see what you make on Facebook.
