2016 #8: Effective White Space {Justine Hovey}

2016 #8: White Space

Hi everyone Justine here, joining you this evening with a post about white space. I chose this technique to show off because I love clean and simple cards. I love how effective white space can be against colour. Today I have three cards to show off how effective white space can be and I have a video tutorial on my YoutTube channel for these cards if you are curious about watching the process.

Step One: I cut a white panel that measures 4 ¼ by 5 1/2. I stamped the “branch” stamp from the Urban Snapshots – Nature Plate 2 several times in three shades of green to create dimension. I added the butterfly from the Urban Snapshots – Nature Plate 2 three times in a random pattern in black ink.

US Nature 2
Step Two: I stamped the sentiment from the Urban Snapshots – Nature Plate 1 in the white space to the left and mounted the panel onto a top folding card base.

Step One: I cut a white panel that measures 4 ¼ by 5 ½ and masked off an area using masking tape. Using three shades of purple and a blending tool, I blended an ombré background between the masking tape.

Step Two: I stamped the angel from the Urban Snapshots – Nature Plate 2  inside the masking off area in black. I stamped the sentiment in the white space to the right and mounted the panel onto a top folding card base.

Using a zipper was inspired by an Art Journal I saw by Vicky Papaioannou.
Step One: I cut a white panel that measures 4 ¼ by 5 ½ and a card base that measures 11 x 4 ¼ (scored at 5 ½ to make a top folding card). On the card base, I masked off 1/4 inches around the base to make a white border. I blended three shades of green to create a colourful background and stamped the tree from the Urban Snapshots – Nature Plate 1 in black ink towards the top left corner. I removed the masking tape

Step Two:  I stamped the sentiment from the Urban Snapshots – Nature Plate 1 on the bottom right hand corner of the white panel. I cut a “V shape” into the top of the card panel and glued a zipper to the back of it. I trimmed the edges of the zipper.  I attached the panel to the base with 3D foam tape (since the zipper was bulky I had to use thick foam tape.

The one thing I would do differently on the “zipper card” is to wait until the glue is completely dry before moving onto cutting the zipper down – that way the fuzzies don’t stick to the card. It was a lot of fun using a zipper on my card and I wonder what other things we can reuse around the house for our projects. What kinds of things have you used? Let me know in the comment below!

Welcome Justine! Such a great and effective example of White Space. The simple use of one colour palette with these plates is striking. Love the creative use of the zipper too. Thanks for sharing your creativity with us. ~Gillian
