Topic 15: Gels and Mediums

Hi everyone Alison here, joining you this evening with an art journal page, on which I have used various gels and mediums. I love to add different textures to my art, and there are so many wonderful gels and mediums out there, that enable me to do this. I've also used a mash-up of the beautiful new Hot Pick 1506 butterflies, with some of my favourite Ink & The Dog stamps. 

Step One: My base is a piece of watercolour paper ( 27 x 19.5 cm ). I used Ranger Glue N Seal Matte to adhere torn pieces of book and music pages, together with some painty scraps of kitchen towel, and also a paper doily (not shown in this photo).

Step Two: Next, I painted the whole page with White Gesso, then I used a palette knife to apply Grunge Paste through the Crafter's Workshop Mini Specimens Stencil on opposite sides of my page. 

Step Three: I mixed some Bora Bora Fresco Paint with some water in a Small Spray Bottle, spritzed it across the top of the page, then spritzed with water and held the page up to allow the watery paint to drip over and around the textures.

Step Four: I added some background stamping, using Aquamarine Archival Ink with the wordy image from Ink & The Dog Petals Plate 1, and Jet Black Archival Ink with the script circle from Hot Pick 1504.

Step Five: Time to stamp some images. I stamped the moth lady from Vintage Nudes Plate 2, and the butterfly collage from Wings Plate 4 onto White Stamping Card, adding some colour with Antique Linen Distress Ink. The butterflies from Hot Pick 1506 were stamped onto music page.

Step Six: Now for some more texture. First, I glued the moth lady and butterfly collage in place with Golden Regular Gel Matte. Then I mixed a little Beach Hut Fresco Paint with some Golden Glass Bead Gel, and used a palette knife to apply it around the stamped images. I left this to dry naturally for a few hours.

Step Seven: I adhered the cut out butterflies to my page with Ranger Glue N Seal Matte. I wanted to stamp the 'Brave Wings' phrase from Hot Pick 1506 on my page, but I didn't want it all stamped in one place, so I cut my stamp into 4 pieces ( I wanted to be able to use the little butterfly on its own too). If you don't trim the pieces after they are cut, you can just put them back together on a stamp block if you want to stamp the phrase in one piece.

Step Eight: Once the words were stamped, I also stamped a few tiny butterflies (from the Hot Pick 1506 phrase) in between the larger ones. I finished off with some splatters of watered down Beach Hut and Little Black Dress Fresco Paint, then sponged the edges of my artwork and highlighted the glass bead gel texture with Jet Black Archival Ink. I hope I've inspired to get out your gels and mediums and join in with our current challenge. The glass bead gel is a particular favourite of mine, it dries clear, so you can add paint to colour it like I have, or maybe just highlight it with some Treasure Gold.
