2015 Topic 12: Stencils
I
painted a wooden triptych with Little Black Dress, back and front and sanded
any rough spots before adding another coat. I then stencilled the leaves from PS006 around the edges of the panels using white
paint.I kept adding leaves (some hanging from the top of the panels) until I
felt that the whole thing had enough cover
When the white paint was dry I washed some of
the transparent colours over the white. I
started with Pumpkin Soup and Limelight and then added Beach Hut. To create
darker areas I added South Pacific, Hyde Park
and Blueberry. I used the transparent colours so that the white stencilled
areas showed through creating a watercolour effect. Don’t worry if the colours
go over the black paint as they add to the effect around the edges and can be
painted over anywhere else.
I
then stencilled more leaves, again using white paint, over the original
leaves. In this picture the finished colours of the first layer can also be
seen. I washed colour over the second layer of leaves, this time using more
green such as Hey Pesto and yellow to
create brighter colours .
I
added another layer of leaves, this time using Grunge Paste to add dimension.
I mixed the Grunge Paste with Green Olives to avoid having to paint over the
dried paste.
To make the Grunge Paste leaves stand out I
applied Treasure Gold over the leaves. The easiest way to do this is to replace
the stencil and then rub the Treasure Gold onto the leaves. This avoids blobs
of gold in the wrong places!
I
then stencilled the flowers from PS003 randomly over the panels. Don’t worry if a flower goes over the grunge
paste leaves because the gold can be reapplied after the flowers are painted.
I used Nougat for the brighter flowers and added a little brown paint to the Nougat to make a slightly darker colour for flowers that are tucked behind
other flowers .
Again
I used the transparent colours to colour the flowers, here I started with Pumkin Soup and also Autumn Fire. Because some of the flowers were stencilled with darker
paint they will be darker when finished adding to the dimensional effect.
To create
darker areas I added Eggplant and some Plum.
I then added Bougainvillea to some of the petals to make them nice and bright.
If any of the Grunge Paste leaves have been painted over they can have some
more Treasure Gold added at this time .
I
painted some Smoothy White Stamping Card with Nougat and stamped the face from Ink and the DogWW6 onto it. I like stamping faces onto paint like this because the skin
colour is already done and the base colour is light enough to add any other
colours as I have done here. I have
used a frame from my stash, which was painted black and coloured with Treasure Gold, to frame the stamped face. This was stuck in place onto the triptych.
To
finish the project I rubbed Treasure Gold around the edges of the panels. I
then rubbed Treasure Gold onto some flowers and butterflies which were then
stuck to the project as shown .
Well
that’s all for now folks. It’s amazing how much can be created using only two
stencils , and I didn’t even use all of the designs on the stencil sheets. I
hope that this has inspired you to create something bright and colourful. Bye
for now.

So good to have you back Liz. Your use of opaques/translucent paints to build up the layers is exquisite, by introducing warmer hues such as Autumn Fire you have created a rich opulant effect.

This is incredibly clever, Liz, it shows such skill! I thought at first it was a background paper you had used. I have been using some of your stamps recently and they are exquisite,
