2015 #3 Colour Canvas {by Lynne Moncrieff}

2015 Theme 3: Paint

Hi everyone, Lynne Moncrieff (Adorn) joining you this evening with a post focusing on Fresco Finish Acrylic Paints for you.

Frescos are the feature of this canvas, whether applied straight from the bottle to create colour and texture directly on the canvas, or to paint white cardstock in preparation for the stamped components of the canvas.  For the painted cardstock, I set about mixing Frescos to create bespoke colours. The resultant colours are not intended as substitutes for any particular Fresco Finish Acrylic, the idea is to extend the working power of your favourite Frescos.

The newly designed Sara Naumann stamp sets influenced the style of my canvas which has a whimsical nature to it.

A base layer of pattern and texture was laid down on the box canvas in the form of floral fabric, muslin and vintage book text adhered with Golden Regular Gel Medium Matt with Grunge Paste applied through sequin waste.

Once dry, working in a random fashion I applied new Fresco Finish Acrylic paints:- Buff, Banana Southern Skies, Prawn, Jade, Blue Oyster, Glass Blue and Blueberry with an artist palette knife. When finished with applying the Frescos I randomly applied white Gesso. Between layers of paint I would mist with water, allowing the paint to drip down the panel. A final touch of dry brushed Gesso to highlight the texture achieved from the Grunge Paste
When happy with the canvas it was time to move to the next step ...

ESN15

Southern Skies, Blueberry, Wisteria and Vanilla were mixed before applying with a foam brush to a stamp from ESN15.  This was randomly stamped directly onto the canvas.  (Note that this stamp was used later in the project as the centre for the flower.)

ESN13

Inking the music score from ESN13 with Staz-on Jet Black I randomly stamped onto the canvas.  I repeated with the handwritten script stamp from this same set.

At this stage the canvas was laid aside allowing me to focus on painting cardstock which was painted in different colours for the various stamped components. For the first sheet of cardstock the photo below shows the quantities I mixed of:- Prawn, Bougainvillea, Wisteria and Vanilla before applying with a baby wipe.

Did you guess that the bird's wing forms the bloom? Once I had stamped enough wings forthe bloom I continued stamping as the wing, when cut lengthwise, forms the scalloped border for the top and bottom edges of the canvas. The bird's wing also creates the leave for the flower. This little bird is such a useful stamp!

Leftover paint from the above step was applied to a length of seam binding with a baby wipe (Once dry apply a light application of Gel Medium and twist the length of seam binding.  Leave to dry.). For the star, after stamping, I  applied Fresco Finish Metallic Glaze.

Let me share some detail photographs of the finished canvas.

It was after the stamped elements were adhered and I stepped back from the canvas that I decided to add details with a Sharpie white paint pen and randomly stamped the handwritten text from ESN15 with Staz-on Jet Black ink.

Then stamping with paint, the linked circles from ESN13.

Colour Paint Recipes:-
Petals and Scallop Edging:- Prawn, Bougainvillea, Wisteria and Vanilla
Flower Centre:- Smurf, Banana and Vanilla
Star and Word Tiles:- Banana and Vanilla + Metallic Glaze
Bird:- Glass Blue and Banana
Bird's wing and Leaves:- Blue Oyster, Banana and Vanilla

The world of colour is still a relatively new place for me to venture into and I never could imagine that I would create a canvas so embracing of colour. I hope this blog post will inspire you whether you are new to stamping with paint or mixing your own paint colours. As beautiful as Frescos are when applied directly from the bottle, just imagine the possibilities you have at your fingertips for creating a whole new world of colour to play with.

Wishes
Lynne (Adorn)
