GD: Pam Thorburn Project #3 Hoot Hoot So Cute

"Hi everyone, Pam here with my third and final project this semester, another scrapbook page using Eclectica 03  and Eclectica 04".

Eclectica³ {Ellen Vargo} 03    Eclectica³ {Ellen Vargo} 04

This page also features the use of tags Manila tags 08 .

Have you ever had a project that just didn't want to come together? Well, this was one of those projects for me. Nothing seemed to work the way I wanted it to. I knew I wanted to use tags on the background, and also to make an owl embellishment, to echo those on Charlotte's sweatshirt. So far, so good.

It was the colour scheme however, that I struggled to get right, so I thought you might be interested to know about that struggle!

First up, I looked at the colours on Charlotte's sweatshirt and decided to use the pink, purple and blue on the background tags. I sponged on some Candy Floss

Then I used EEV04 stamps to make some flowers on the tag using Sky, Pansy and Lilac Fresco Paints.

Wasn't very happy with that look, so sponged on some circles using Stencil Girls Fade Horizontal Cicles.... However, the colours still didn't work with the photo.

So that's when I turned the tags over and mixed up some Sherbert, Tango and London Bus to match the colour of Charlotte's sweatshirt.

I needed to break up the solid blocks of colour so I used the diagonal design stamp from the set to stamp a band of Candy Floss across the tag-you can just see it on the tag off to the right.

But the tags still needed something more. You will have to forgive me here, as I was becoming very frustrated by this time, and forgot to take a few step by steps photos here, so I'll describe what I did and show you the finished result.

I masked of the diagonal stamping and used the circle stencil across the tag with Candy Floss Fresco Paint. However, the tag was still lacking in something, so I reapplied the diagonal stamp across the tag, but this time used Little Black Dress Fresco Paint to cover the Candy Floss stamping. If you look closely here you can see the Candy Floss stamping under the black stamping.

I had earlier used Candy Floss paint to stamp two rows of  diagonals across the bottom of my cardstock, but since the colour just wasn't working with the layout, I once again overstamped it using Little Black Dress paint. If you look closely you can see the Candy Floss peeping through. I actually quite like that look though-it gives a slight appearance of a shadow. I ruled a frame onto the cardstock and machine stitched around the frame. You can see that in the final layout.

Finally it was time to construct the owl embellishment. I painted some blocks of watercolour paper in Fresco Paint.

Then stamped some of Ellen's gorgeous stamps onto two colour blocks, and used a Spellbinders die to cut an oval shape.

Here you can see how the cut pieces were assembled to create the owl. The feet are cut along the veins of the leaf stamp.  I added some white pen detail also.

So here's the final layout. The funny thing is that it is probably the simplest of all my PaperArsty projects, and yet it caused me most grief.

However, it goes to show that if you persevere you can break through those blocks that try to trip us up!

Well, I'm sad to say that that was my last project for my guest designer stint. I have really enjoyed working with all the gorgeous PaperArtsy products. I hope you have enjoyed my projects and that Leandra might ask me back one day!

Pam.

Leandra Says: Wow Pam, what a great photo, and your perseverance is truly admirable! It's really hard when things don't go as planned, but the great thing with paint, is that if you keep at it you can usually generate the correct colour and layers eventually! That's all good until you are on a deadline :)

It's been a pleasure to have you on board, many people at the shows we attended the last few weeks have said how much they have enjoyed your posts this semester. It's nice for those of us who are a not generally scrapbookers to see your design process in action. Thankyou!

Gillian Says: This layout is adorable, so glad you kept going and didn't give up. The detailed background really makes the pic of Charlotte pop ... love it. Thank you for sharing your creativity and inspiration with us all.

If you would like to join in this week's challenge and play along with Pam's techniques, then do link up your creativity here, and go in the draw to win some PA stamps of your choice! You need to link your entry by 17:00, Sunday April 27th 2014

  3. Thank you for talking us through your process. You have had three such different projects this week. It has been so different in your GD posts seeing your very different take on scrapbooking and how you have introduced the PA products, and I much prefer it to scrapbooking styles I have seen in the past.
