2018 Topic 4: Whimsy

Hi everyone, it's Helen with you today, and I'd like to share with you ...... the Spoon Family!
I loved the topic 'Whimsy' as you can let your imagination run wild.  These wooden spoons just appealed to me - they came in a pack of three, each with a different length handle and the bowl of the spoon just the right shape for a face.I'm working with Kim Dellow stamps here so needed something that was a reasonable size to show them off in all their glory.

Painted in bright colours, the images fit perfectly and can be cut up and layered up to make necklaces, headdresses, clothes etc.

I'm not the greatest at drawing faces so roughly painted in the hair and then mapped out the features first with pencil and then pen. At this point I wasn't too sure how they were going to turn out if I'm honest!

However by the time I'd added coloured pencils (especially on the hair) and defined the features with a black Staedtler Chinagraph pencil (love those things!), it all came together and proved to be very enjoyable. The highlighting just finishes it off. Looking critically the eyes are a bit wonky, but then people's faces are never symmetrical anyway.

The colour palette was simple, just four colours of Distress reinkers: Peacock Feathers, Picked Raspberry, Squeezed Lemonade and Twisted Citron. I like working with a small number of colours as it's quick and easy.
I suppose I should name them really, so here goes:

When I made these I was thinking of using wool for their hair, but in fact it was a lot easier to draw and paint it on even though you are a bit limited with the hairstyles. I particularly enjoyed looping the necklaces onto the handles to make it more dimensional - I've also done that with the lower part of the dresses. These stamps lend themselves to having the centres cut out and being cut down and chopped about to fit your projects - they're very versatile. 

You could try making some of these art dolls using faces from the Lynne Perrella or Clare Lloyd ranges (they'd fit really well) or make some Hallowe'en ones with some of the Hot Picks - there's a lovely skull in there with gravestones and spiders' webs (ooh, I think I'm off to have a go!)
