NEW PaperArtsy Release: Lynne Perrella {Feb 2025}

A note from Leandra:

I'm sure you are aware how much I love a release from Lynne Perrella, and this release, as you'll see is pretty interesting to work with. Both Dounia and I have had a bit of a play, and I think it's pretty helpful for you to see how these designs cross over journalling and different colourways.

I'm thrilled that Lynne has taken time to put pen to paper and explain her intent regarding how these came to be, so take a few moments to read her thoughts below.

Leandra will be along to share with you LIVE these new products and ideas over in our Facebook Group, 'PaperArtsy People' shortly after this post publishes, and ... don't forget

These stamps are available EXCLUSIVELY from our approved stockists. Please check the list at the foot of this post to find a retailer online or geographically near you, it makes sense to order within your country where possible. Our retailers also endeavour to join the designer's live to share their direct shopping links - this makes it super easy for you to find a store with product in stock immediately.

Design Notes:
NEW Stamp Designs by Lynne Perrella
“Regal Symmetry” Collection

Designing a new collection of stamps often involves visiting many of the long-time “favorites” in my mind……whether they are objects I have actually collected, or (more likely) rarified artifacts.  For instance, I have a collection of white porcelain phrenology heads as well as dramatic fortune-telling hands displayed throughout the bookshelves in my husband’s den – but suffice it to say I will never possess a rarefied ancient document affixed with endless royal seals and insignias!   But, as I sit at my drawing table, I can visit any topic that intrigues me and translate those fascinations into detailed rubber stamp designs.

For this new collection, titled “Regal Symmetry”, I rounded up a cast of wonderful characters, all of them with mysterious gazes, baronial stares, and haughty glances.  Looking like they could be found in a secret corridor or a cloistered walkway, both male and female “royals” are emblazoned with regal trappings and wisps of manuscripts.

For inspiration, I imagined a tower of mysterious leather-bound vintage volumes stacked on a huge carved library table; each book on a different topic.  Alchemy, geometry, architecture, games and sorcery, botany, etc.  I imagined the mythic books full of engravings, falling open to any page, and what I might find.  Odd markings, measurements, tracings, and embossments appear throughout this collection, including a variation on Da Vinci’s “Vitruvian Man”.

I have always wanted to do my own rendering of a mystical fortune telling hand, and this was my chance.  At a glance, it looks archival, but actually it is my own version that includes “found typography” from an old book of spells, plus scratchy details of numerals and symbols.  And – did I mention? – I used my own hand for the outline, since I wanted this drawing to be totally my own invention.  A good friend of mine gifted me with a carved wooden hand that has the feeling of the classic fortune telling hands in old books; and you can see it here, as a backdrop to my drawing.  Kismet!

Games often reflect our fascination with royalty, including the hierarchy of Kings, Queens, and other costumed figures.  And sets of hand-painted Tarot cards were sometimes commissioned by the wealthiest-of-the-wealthy Renaissance-era art patrons.

I’ve seen actual ancient Tarot cards at The Cloisters Museum in Manhattan, and they are stunningly intricate and charismatic, with gold embossments.  My “Queen” card is not  literally a Tarot card, but the two frontal faces of rival Queens suggest a complicated drama. And I re-invented a playing card with detailed costumes and heraldic touches that would be fun to hand-color.

When I researched vintage phrenology heads, I discovered a series of female characters shown in profile; each of their heads absolutely full of indecipherable words. I wanted to evoke the concept of female wisdom and intuition and decided to “fill” her head with a beautiful quote that is posted on my drawing table. With a bit of space left at the bottom, I added classic words from the Persian poet, Rumi -- “May the beauty we love be what we do.” I did my own lettering because I wanted the sentiments to look personal and poetic, plus I knew that actual typography would look choppy and harsh.

This new collection is done in my classic “LP collage” style and is absolutely full of endless layers, details and refinements.  Theatricality prevails, and each image tells a story.

Go forth, with your regal pennants flying, and create something special with this new collection!  As always, all my intricate collaged details are captured by the manufacturing wizardry of PaperArtsy; and they have a whole range of creative products available to keep you creating, experimenting, and enjoying the journey.

REVEALED

It's not too tricky to extend the bodice of this stamp, and both Dounia and I had the idea to do so, and we both added a sort-of skirt too.

Dounia's is bookmark size onto a gel-printed background.

QUEEN

The Rival 'Queens' certainly do emit a sense there is a bit of tension between them!

 RESILIENCE

What started as a simple journal spread, grew into a finger-fringed dress. She's off to the ball in fancy dress with her lace collar atop the fortune teller's tissue-painted hand.

REGAL

Sometimes simple is best, and these gel-printed background papers add highlights across the stamped image by default.

SWIRLED

Dounia has used the swirls in this design to great effect, but also the pattern surrounding his head became a useful background layer.

WARRIOR

Loving the expression on her face - she mean's business! And what a headpiece!

The samples above and below use layering to great effect, with the faces coloured beautifully to bring these characters to life.

With the addition of shading, you can appreciate each of the collaged elements that make up this design.

PRISCILLA

This 'costume' is evoking in me distant memories of a hybrid Mad Max/ Priscilla Queen of the desert vibe from back in the day from those 1980's/90's Australian movies.

DRESSED UP

I love this head-dress, I think it's coral, or maybe that it is coral-coloured gives that impression ... and as you can see below, all the elements pop off the background, and the tissue paper 'dress' adds more drama to her purpose. A wonderful architectural element makes the perfect collar.

WISTFUL

The elements of each design, and how they are assembled to build a story, seem to really spark imaginations, and pull you into the design in the process. It's not hard to imagine the possible stories of her life.

LEADER AHOY

From his hilltop viewpoint, he's searching for something, the enemy approaching, or perhaps a supply ship's arrival?

ELEMENTS

All the releases of the week come together in this journal spread; Alison's background text stamps, Kate's stencils, and Lynne's stamps.

Thanks for joining us on another wonderful release from Lynne. We hope our ideas help you see the potential to explore all sizes and styles of creativity.
